We often use the past simple tense like this:
Verb + ed (indicates this has been done in a time before)
There is also irregular types for verbs, in which most of them dont even change, such as:
Hit, Put, and others.

We sometimes see the verb to-be on the past simple tense, words like,
Was or were. These words also have a negative version, which is just wasN'T wereN'T

You use this for narrate actions  that ocurred in a moment in the past.

In regular verbs you add ed at the end for example:
Verbs+ed: play/played, start/started, love/loved

Positive: I played 
Negative: I didn't play
Interrogative: did I play?

Irregular: go/went, buy/bought, eat/ate

Positive: I went to the school
Negative: i didn't go to the school
