Context: Red had forced Parsell into have sex with him, even though he doesn't want to, however he felt weak when trying to oppose.
Commentary: Despite being forced into something, Parsell chose not to fight back in fear. This leads to the big idea of surrender.
"Can you handle my having feelings for you?'... 'I want to know if you can handle feelings'" (pg 112).
Context: While playing basketball with Slide Step, Parsell felt angry and embarrassed that Slide Step had embarrassed him in front of a crowd, therefore he ended up insulting Slide Step in the heat. This leads to the two to have sex right after, and for Slide Step to tell Parsell his true feelings.
Commentary: This leads back to the big idea of confession as Slide Step had admitted to Parsell that he had feelings for him.

This connects back to the big idea of internal struggle, throughout the book TJ struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and finds himself questioning it often. 

"Slide Step, I'd learn, was well respected, and everything in prison was about respect. You either had it or you didn't, and even when you did, it was frequently tested."

This relates back to the idea of freedom because how slowly he realizes even his freedom is being stripped away and even the smallest decisions he can't do since in prison you are restricted. He sees how different the world is from inside and how it feels to not have freedom. 

"they watched me to see how I would react. Stunned and uneasy, I didn't know what to say. I blinked. My brother warned me tested.."

-Once transferred elsewhere, Parsell meets Nate. While Parsell was away someone had stolen his cigarettes. When Nate asks if Parsell would ever snitch on whoever took his cigarettes and Parsell, tempting to bluff, says yes. However Nate threatens Parsell if he were to ever snitch on Nate for ever taking the cigarettes. This big idea shows the use of fear in order to have control over other inmates. With Nate threatening Parsell, this would cause fear within Parsell not to snitch.

"Was I really gay? Did I actually feel the way I did the night before I came to prison, or was it just a trick I was playing on myself to make what was happening to me in there easier to take? In the past, if I lied to myself long enough sometimes I would start to believe it - pushing the truth so far from the surface that I began to doubt ts existence." (pg 128-129).
- Parsell can be seen asking himself whether or not his is gay multiple times throughout his memoir. However, he goes further in depth that maybe he doesn't have an answer to that because of the struggle he faces if he were to come out. Therefore he chooses to deny/push back this idea. The big idea that can be seen in here is indecision and internal struggle.

Since Parsell had admitted to Slide Step that he wanted to "try it" with a younger guy, Slide Step had set him up with another guy, however he wasn't exactly young to Parsell's standards. In this quote, the big idea of disappointment can be seen in in Parsell not only was he disappointed in having to be forced into someone he didn't want to have sex with, but disappointed in Slide Step who, went ahead and proceeded with the idea without consulting Parcell.

"I was always surprised by the different sides of himself he showed when we were alone. He'd share personal things with me, and he liked to cuddle on the floor underneath his bed." (pg 131).
