This was her first day at high school. She had been put into Unwin house and she was worried she had doomed herself and her brother for the rest of their schooling life. Once she met the house group and the teacher Mr Wilkins she realises he wasn't as bad as she thought him to be, he was a charismatic person who was full of life Isla from that point then began to realise that he isn't as bad as she thought. After going outside and learning how to play handball she began to make some friends and was now looking forward to the school year and started to think better about everything.

Summary: Isla is forced to clean the windscreen of the cars with cold water every morning, leaving her hand cold “right down to the bone”, for the rest of the day. The heaters around the school provided warmth and were highly sought after by all the students. The typing room was “toasty” warm from an electric fan heater but was built within the “dark corridors” in an old building with “thick stone walls”.

The cold symbolises hardship in her life and the this contrasts with the warmth. The darkness is also mentioned, which shows sadness

1. How does Isla’s attitude towards school change during the chapter? What causes this?
Isla's attitude toward school changes as she becomes more comfortable with the environment she had been placed into. Mr Wilkins helps with this by making the kids learn each others names, "it made us laugh, the speed of it". They were enjoying themselves and this caused them to feel more comfortable with their surroundings.

2.
