In search of fame and fortune, Portuguese explorer FerdinandMagellan set out from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. En route he discovered what is now known as the Strait of magellan and became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean.

It also meant that sailors would not have to cross the Mediterranean or Arabia, considered to be very dangerous at the time. Columbus was an explorer. In 1492, he sailed from Europe to America. He and his sailors crossed the Atlantic Ocean, not knowing where they would land. It was a voyage into the unknown. Luckily they landed in what was knew as the new world (now known as The Americas) after their "Europeans began to explore and settle in America.
