We don't have a variety of settings at our school. We have the various playgrounds (kinder, primary, intermediate), the PE slab/basketball court, then the open area that belongs to the city where I learned that PennyWise lives. My favorite is the kinder playground because we don't get reprimanded for being there as we are kindergarteners. We can also spy on the stray cats while they spy on us.

I completely disagree. Using technology outside is still an authentic outdoor experience. I believe that it might also enhance the experience of being outdoors because of the contrast to the environment. Additionally I think it might further encourage students to use diverse tools in different settings and apply what they are learning in a different way instead of on a piece of paper. Furthermore, many careers use technology outdoors and this use of tech will prepare them for the workforce.

I agree that I am more confident with teaching outside this year. It is frowned upon because of the transition time, but I am building up enough research to use if I get called on the carpet for it. I am so grateful for the variety of outdoor learning locations we have at our school. Our garden is full of many different plants, it is also right next to a learning sanctuary which usually has picnic tables with umbrellas where students can sit and do work. We also have an outdoor courtyard right in front of our 3rd-5th grade classrooms. The courtyard has a mini garden with plants that our classes have planted from our classroom hydroponic units, as well as a variety of tables and seating for students, including outdoor whiteboards for lessons too.

Using technology allows students to quickly research the name of an unknown plant, check the environmental conditions in which a plant prefers to grow, and send data to a neighboring lab with a few clicks. Taking pictures and videos allows students to cherish the special moments of their discovery over and over again...as well as share it with family and friends!

I was not supported by administration this year, and I was so influenced by this program that I am teaching both math and science next year, and one of my requirements when interviewing was that administration would support the garden and learning outdoors.

Part 1 I enjoyed a creative literature project with another co worker this year. Students were read a story about a kid who creates their own society in the backyard. We then had the students plan the parts of their society and what they would want to create if they had the opportunity.

We did a team building exercise after a particularly contentious debate where the tension travelled into the next day. We have a rope net as part of a rope's course. The holes in it are large enough for a student to step through. They had to get all of their team from one side to the other without touching the rope. If you touch, you start over. Easy right? The catch was that they had to pick up and pass 2 of their classmates through holes on the second level, which happened to be at their shoulder level. They had to work together. Most memorable part was seeing them fight and argue at first, but then as they grew exhausted and I didn't let them stop. Eventually, they were too tired to argue and figured it out. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Early in 1st semester I analyzed several speeches with my students centered around the need to advocate for climate change awareness. I would have loved to have added outdoor time then to truly connect to nature and foster a deeper understanding of why our environment is so vulnerable and in need of help.

Part 2 Next we harvested parts seeds, and pods, and trimmed branches from trees in our garden and used those materials as the building tools for our society. The students gathered their items, and began building. Throughout the project there was swapping between groups, collaborations, new ideas created, and a complete sense of play and creation that took place with the group.

I love that I can go right outside of my classroom door and into our little habitat and outdoor classroom area. We have trees, bushes, and stumps to sit on. The students love to take care of the bird feeders, bird baths, and plants we put in the area. We use it for quiet reading times, reflections, science activities, etc.

Having access to a wide variety of outdoor learning spaces makes bringing learning outside inviting and versatile. Primavera school has invested in these spaces over the past few years, and there is certainly more to do!

Yes, and no. I feel that most lessons delivered indoors can also be delivered outdoors. The key is establishing a plan, and ensuring all materials and such can be used, transported, demonstrated outside. For example, I use a lot of manipulative math pieces. If I were to deliver a double digit long division math lesson I would not want to take that material outside if I was using manipulatives as they are 100s of little beads which I would hate to drop and lose in the wood chips. I would however feel confident and be able to deliver the double digit division lesson if I were teaching the standard algorithm using pencil and paper, with my small easel white board to model.

Setting the expectations prior to going outside helped as well as speaking in a lower voice and acting as if this was sacred time and space because we were actually taking time to enjoy the outdoors, the feel of the sun on our skin, feeling the breeze blow over and lift our hair, hearning the birds and the airplanes, the traffic that sounded like waves. My grade level has already planned to use the Blue Watermelon recipe's from this year and next year to have one recipe a month for 2024-2025. Our goal is to have our PTO cover the cost of recipe's for 2 of our 3 third grade classes while our last class has applied to the program.

No. Our outside area has been remiss this year, with little to no maintenance provided. While there are a few trees immediately outside our door, the rest of the area has been either cleared of any plant life, or left to die. I feel that if we were supported in wanting to extend our learning outside, the preservation and continued care of the outdoor environment would be of paramount imporantance.

I fully agree. A few years ago I read a book about the different ways education is structured around the world. For instance, in Finland I read about how many early chilhood programs, Pre-k through 2nd, are fully outdoors and open ended. Even in the winter students only go in for naps. Their play, learning, and meals are outdoors. Meals take place in an area with an outdoor fireplace and students are encouraged to interact with nature in their play, inquiry, and discovery.

I felt supported by other teachers (my team), administration (my principal) and our PTO this year!

My team works together to incorporate the outdoors and remind each other to get the kids outside. We also share the responsibility of the gathering additional Blue Watermelon Ingredients for our additional classes.

My Administration is amazing! My principal is checking in with all teachers to see who and when is using the outdoor classroom. He also checking in with me to talk about the Step Outside classes!

On top of all the amazing staff, our PTO has opened grants, paid for hydroponics, seeds and asked what supplies we want in our outdoor classroom. I am so looking forward to tapping into our PTO's grants for next year to expand how we use the outdoors.

One risk I took this year was walking my 3rd grade kids from our campus over to a nearby camp and trail to meet up with our 5th/6th grade class and their teachers. This was our 2nd meet up but I always wonder how well they will do with the distance and with the activity that is set up by the older kids/teachers. There is also always a chance for slips and falls, animal encounters, feeling comfortable away from campus, and exhaustion. We end up having a great time!

Step outside has rekindled my approach to outdoor education and environmental education. As a kid I was an outdoor fanatic - this was pre screens everywhere. I learned and queried much about the natural word. It gave me a love of animals and observation. I believe that it depends on the child as to whether technology would be a hindrance outdoors or a tool. For example, music outside is technology and children love our Friday dance parties and picnics at lunch! During a whole group lesson outside however this may be distracting. Also if a student wanted to work outside with a computer to type their essay, I would think that it would provide a relaxing, calming space to work and may optimize their output.

The lesson that was memorable my students and I was a science lesson where they had to create a model for their sunflower seedling. They had to work together and collaborate and use science tools in the field. I had several students comment that this was the best day of their lives and that they hope we do it again. I was reviewing the topic of themes in literature. I had a scavenger hunt planned for looking for the themes. I had when outside and taped the paper around the garden space. They had to use their clipboard and go around read the short passage and decide if it was a theme or not. I would have not even thought of doing this outside until before this class. Most of my challenges are related to classroom management. Definitely need to work on setting clear expectations when going outdoors.

I would have loved to have a solid farmers market to sell our garden veggies. I keep harvesting and they go bad because I just haven’t set up a better program to make it work.

My students love to go to the garden to write, draw or just relax. Even when we aren’t planning on it they ask me if we can go work there. I love how much they enjoy just being there. It relaxes them and they seem to concentrate better.

The program has given me tools in every way. Even to listen to kids needs and don't be so structure when giving a class.

When used properly technology can help enhance the outdoor experience in my opinion. One example from this year was we installed a bird feeder with a wifi camera that takes pictures of birds that use the feeder and sends them directly to my phone, I am able to pull up pictures of all of the animals that visit the feeder on the screen, it's really amazing and kids arent always able to see birds using the feeder when we are outside because naturally the birds are not wanting to use the feeder with a classroom full of students around.

I work with students studying agriculture and the future of farming is heavily based technology. There was a farm in the Netherlands that planted, fertilized, weeded, and harvested an entire filed with no human involvement, only tractors controlled by robots and AI.

There are definitely times when I think technology can be a distraction, but I don't think it in anyway diminishes the authentic natural experience for students.

Yes, agree. It's been so nice to get out of my comfort zone and take everyday lessons outside.
