One issue I noticed is that Max seems a little afraid of Freak because he looked fierce and he hit people with his crutches. In the text it states, "So maybe he wasn't really all that fierce in day care, except I'm pretty sure he did hit a kid with his crutch once, whacked the little brat pretty good. One thing I noticed is that Max calls himself many names because of the way he acts, and possibly because of his learning disability. It can be possible that his relationship with his parents caused him to call himself other sobriquets of dumb. In the passage it states, "And Gram right away shushes him and says don't ever say that, because little pictures have big ears, which makes me run to the mirror to see if it is my ears made me look like HIM. What a butthead, huh? Well, I was a butthead because like I said, I never had a brain until Freak moved down the street."
