Task three

(The exhibition) collected works of Gabriel Isak, a Swedish photographer suffering from depression for many years. The highlight is his The

Blue Journey series. He commented on the theme of series that: “In this blue journey, the loneliness in this space is not just loneliness,

but a world to be explored with the spirit and deconstructed with dreams.” Trying to pry into every picture of the series, the main

characters that never show up are hiding in the surreal blue landscape, which in turn depicts their inner world, “the works symbolize our

unconsciousness”. To invite the audience into the space set in the inner world, the commonly used gloomy atmosphere, boundless sea,

and large areas of blue are introduced to reveal the negative psychology, and more, the stress in life that the city dwellers draw a veil over.

Created by environmental activist and artist Jenny Kendler, "Birdwatching" is a 40-foot-long sculpture that shows the eyes of 100 species of birds threatened or endangered by climate change. In the midst of the devastating effects of climate change on other creatures and their habitats, the birds' gaze asks us to consider our responsibilities. It is necessary to protect the diversity of animals and the destruction of the natural environment will easily lead to animal genocide, thus leading to the break of the biological chain. Jennie Kendler's work draws attention to the potential extinction of many species of birds and calls for conservation now to give vulnerable species a better chance of survival.

Creative description:From Hyperallergic: "Among such works, Jenny Kendler’s crowd pleasing “Birds Watching” (2018) takes a particularly imaginative approach. Across the length of a 40-foot steel frame, the artist has affixed 100 images of variously sized and colored birds’ eyes — all species imperiled by climate change. At a glance, this cluster of concentric color looks like a whimsical shooting range or a floral bouquet. Upon further inspection, the viewer finds her or himself being viewed by a quizzical and accusatory collective stare. This horde of disembodied eyes, each printed on shiny reflective film, reverses the customary human-bird watcher/watched dynamic to incarnate something like an interspecies conscience."

The subject/topic of my talk is birdhouse.
My artwork action concept is to create an art installation birdhouse to promote the protection of bird diversity, to remind people to save birds and animals, not to disturb their living environment.
I responded to David's call that if we act now, the 389 endangered species of birds will have a better chance of survival.

The report featured in this issue of Audubon magazine describes a true and scary look at the future birds face. Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink builds on our previous analysis but relies on far more data, and the results are more detailed. It shows that 389 North American bird species—nearly two-thirds of those studied—are vulnerable to extinction due to climate change. That’s right, extinction. We also analyzed nine climate-related hazards across the United States—threats that will affect people and birds—including increased fire risk, debilitating heat waves, heavy rains, and sea-level rise.

We already know what has to be done to reduce global warming, and we already have a lot of the tools and solutions necessary to do that—what we need now are more people committed to making sure those solutions are put into practice. It’s crucial that we do two things: (1) protect the places that birds need now and into the future and (2) address the root causes of climate change.

My design is site-specific art -- building a birdhouse in an area suitable for birds. Provide a habitat for birds to belong to.

I pay attention to this issue because I chose Birds Watching created by Jenny Kendler when writing my paper, because bird Watching reminds us that protecting the survival of bird diversity and protecting the natural environment is a reciprocal behavior for human beings. In addition, when I searched the materials, I found that there are many artists like Jenny Kendler that often participate in online and real bird protection activities, and use their art forms to show visual effects to appeal to people's attention and protect birds.

Bird-loving website - Audubon calls on people to collect bird-watching necessities and create a haven for the birds people love! I studied the conditions necessary to make an artificial aviary. Different artificial nest boxes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and the shapes and sizes of these nests can attract different birds. And the materials used to make the nest boxes should be colors similar to the environment, such as gray, blue, green, etc. When doing thesis research, I learned from the works of these two artists that if we want to use art forms to attract people's attention to social issues, we need to combine the designed works with real-time social issues.

Put on the trees in the green belt of the campus or under the eaves and floors, give the birds a quiet environment to avoid light, and the nest box should be hung on the trees with less interference from visitors, slightly higher position or better concealment. Because a crowded place is easy to cause damage to the nest box, the birds are also easy to be disturbed.

Under the bird house, a strong visual sign is hung, indicating that this area is arranged by people to provide good comfort for bird life. I think this is a friendly plan to protect the breeding species of birds. I think the audience, after watching this project, will free up a piece of habitat for these birds.

I think my work will be successful because nowadays the Bird Protection Society needs people to make bird-watching equipment for the aviary to help the birds breed, and I put down a tag during the design to remind people that the bird protection program is going on in this area, and urge people to try not to disturb the birds in this area. I hope that the Canterbury campus of UCA may be inspired by this work of art, because according to my survey data, Canterbury is a town with good natural environment protection and some migratory birds, and it needs such birdwatching art facilities -- aviaries to protect the diversity and reproduction of birds.

2. Now let's talk about issues and research.
My focus is on using artwork as a reaction to preserve animal diversity and empower communities.
I decided on this issue because while the problem is profound, it is difficult to find an attractive way to draw public attention to it.
In my thesis research, I evaluated an artwork project called "Bird Watching". This picture is of "Bird Watching", which is about the social issues of saving animal diversity.
When researching bird art conservation activities by artists, I found that art can attract great attention from society and the public.
In short, I think using art activities or works is one of the things that can really bring about change.

3. Now let's turn to the creative process:
I learned from the bird-loving website Audubon that there are activities calling for people to build birdhouses, so I decided to design a birdhouse to promote the conservation of bird diversity in the form of artwork installations.
I researched the requirements for a birdhouse，
Different birdhouses have different shapes and sizes. The shapes and sizes of these birdhouses can attract different birds, and the color used to make birdhouses are similar to the colors of the environment, such as gray, blue and green, which motivated my design inspiration.
This information motivated my design.
During the essay research, I learned from the works of these two artists that if we want to use art forms to attract people's attention to social issues, we need to combine the designed works with real-time social issues.
Overall, I found that not only the type of activism done by the artist is precise, but also the project is committed to creating with activism artwork on a practical level visual to draw attention to social issues of defending animal diversity.

4. The next area I would like to focus on is design.
The two pictures on the left show the draft of the birdhouse. My design features the hanging of a visually strong sign under the birdhouse, indicating that this area is arranged by people to provide a good environment for the life of birds.
On the right are steps to simulate building a birdhouse with wood cutting and mounting.
The text box on the right is my specific concept.
Material: Fir board
Dimensions:22X12X12cm(vertical)
It is placed on the edge of the campus green to remind people to save birds and animals and not to disrupt their living environment.

5. Now let's move on to audience impact:
This picture is from Audubon's activity about the birdhouse
I hope the audience will watch the birdhouse project and realize that this area is designed by people to provide good comfort for bird life,
After interacting with my work, I think my audience has a positive impact on bird conservation and animal conservation.

6. To sum up
I think my work will be successful because nowadays the Bird Protection Society needs people to create facilities to promote the protection of birds, to remind people that there is a bird protection program going on in the area, and to appeal to people to try not to disturb the birds in the area.
I hope that the Canterbury campus of UCA will be inspired by this work of art.
According to my research data, Canterbury is a small town with many dense forests, and every year migratory birds pass by. This is important because it needs such art facilities and birdhouses to defend the diversity of birds.

The extinction of some animal species is a natural process, but there are still many animal extinctions related to human beings, if human beings do not take action to protect wild animals, it is a short-sighted behavior, and will suffer a great loss. Wild animals are the precious wealth of nature and help to maintain the ecological balance. This is very important for human beings. So, I select and analyze two art projects named ‘Birds Watching’ (published in 2018 by Jenny Kendler) and ‘Museum of Biology’ (released in 2021 by Guo Wei), which are both about the social issues of protecting animal diversity. If the ecological balance is destroyed, it may lead to some disastrous consequences, such as extreme weather, sandstorms and so on. Although this issue is profound, it is challenging to find an attractive method to raise public attention to this issue. Under this context, art can attract great attention from society and the public, and I believe using artistic activities or works is one of the things that can really bring about change.

What is the most important thing you’ve learnt on the resit course?
I believe the most important thing I have learned is to link words. While writing this paper, I improved my writing skills. Not only did I have to use link words in the paper, but I also had to use link sentences to make the content less stiff.

How has your padlet changed during the resits?
A lot of content has been added, and some preceding content has been classified.

Why did you choose the issue for your essay and not a different one?
I remember my teacher saying that my art works need to be shown to people from different countries, so the this subject needs to be better acknowledged by everyone.

Was this issue in the news recently?
Yes, my question has to do with saving animals in danger. These are reported in different seasons.

How easy will it be for the audience to understand your artwork?
I think it makes sense because my artwork is like a bird's nest, a reminder that animals are breeding.

How strong is your activist message?

I think it's an activist art piece. Because saving animals in danger doesn't have to be as scary as the enemy.

What is the most important thing you've learnt during the pre-sessional?
I think it's about reflective language.

How has your English improved during the resit course?
I think my content is better than before

Why is it important to discuss the issue you chose?
My theme is about saving endangered animals, because there are some endangered animals in every country or region.

Where is your artwork going to be located? What will you need to consider before putting it there?
I would put it in an area with natural vegetation, thick forest like my campus in Kent. I need to think about the animals in that area.

Where did you first look for information about your issue?
In the UCA library, I found an e-book about endangered animals. The whole book is very professional and detailed.

Could you make any parts of your artwork better if you had more time?
I think I can, because with more time I can better conceive my sketches and perfect my artwork.

Becoming A Reflective Learner

1.Did you have any preconception(s) about your topic which have been clarified/ challenged during the writing process for the activism project?
Yes, I did. For me, the most important experience was to get examples in a different way, because when I was looking for example projects, I found art activism projects in the wrong direction. At the end of, according to Mary gave me “Bird Watching”, I found another example, let me learn that sometimes I need to think differently.

2.What have you noticed/ realized/ learned about the topic of activism?
I learned about different ways that artwork can express content,
Art activism can call on people to take meaningful actions such as saving the environment and upholding human rights.

3.What research/ study skills have you improved on during the writing process?
It's actually a little different from writing essays in college, but this is an English paper,
While writing this paper, I improve my grammar and word skills, not only need to use link words in the paper, but also need to use link sentences to make the content not so stiff.

4.What skills have you improved on while preparing for your presentation?
I think I have improved my English,
If I had classes with English teachers so often, I would speak better now.

5.What aspects did you find difficult at the beginning but have improved on?
Whether it's a thesis or a design, I think the most difficult thing is the choice and logic, but things have improved.
Because I would go to my classmates to discuss with them when I was unsure, like the night before we gave the speech, we had a Zoom debate.

6.How did your ideas develop and change during the design process?
At the beginning, I wanted to make a visual identity design or a poster similar to the biology museum.
But after Mary gave me the idea of a birdhouse, I found information about birdhouses and saw a lot of activities and journals calling for people to build birdhouses. I decided to alter the design theme to birdhouses.

7.What worked well and what didn’t? What did you learn from this?
When I first decided on the birdhouse theme, I actually wanted to make a real birdhouse.
But after I did read comprehension about activism, I found that if my birdhouse was the same as usual birdhouse that of my design was invalid, the combination of artwork and the question was the real effect of art activism, so I decided to change the location of the birdhouse, and change the function of the art of the device, so that it can promote the concept of animal diversity.

8.What would you do differently next time?
It is not only necessary to study information that needs to be designed, but also to allow art activism and design themes to be integrated.

9. What do you wish you had done different so far on the project? What didin’t work out so well? What would you have done differently?
At the time, I felt different from the design concepts I have learned before, but now I have learned that many art activism projects may have many new ideas in the future. Grow my own knowledge to expand my own thinking.

10. Have you changed you mind about anything on the project so far ?if so,why?
From now on, I decided to change the installation art design to graphic design posters, because it can not only save the cost of designing physical objects, but also I think it is very interesting.
