The volunteer, Loraine, was essentially hired to “befriend” those going through tough issues and offer them her presence. This is usually rare phenomenon for people who are facing issues likes homelessness and poverty, but it’s also very effective because it lays the foundation for a new and stronger life. Ultimately, this helps people in poverty talk about their problems in confidence and seek help. Many charitable organizations do not reach out to their target in the same way sanctuary has connected to the people they are fighting for.

One of the most shocking and unique aspects of this charity was the fact that they had hired Loraine to befriend individuals that join their community. This establishes a more meaningful connection between the charity and the individuals seeking help. I think it also makes the individuals seeking help more comfortable and gives them a sense of belonging. It ensures that these individuals will continue to show up and will take steps towards constructing a life for themselves rather than being homeless or an addict. Sanctuary philosophy is that they provide"a meaningful place in a healthy community and a sense of belonging [because] without it, people remain trapped in a lifestyle that is difficult to escape." The hope of this charity is to provide the most fundamental need of people on the street, which is a meaningful place in a healthy community and a sense of belonging. Poverty is "the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support." This social issue  has long affected people all over the world. However, Canada has attempted to address this issue by introducing public programs such as employment insurance, pension programs, child benefits, and tax credits. Additionally year after year, its been reported that the most impoverished people in Canada have been Indigenous people. Canada's social movement against poverty are working hard to advocated that poverty is a social problem not an individual one.
