The island was discovered by Vasco Núñez de Balboa, famous discoverer of the South Sea (Pacific Ocean) in 1513 and was founded by Father Hernando de Luque, on June 29, 1524 and baptized with the name of San Pedro, being founded, around 1549, with a population of slaves. Also, the site houses a military base of the United States Army, located at the top of Cerro de la Cruz, which represents a great economic boost, due to the number of soldiers stationed there during the Second World War.

Starting in 1885, it began to benefit from the construction of the French canal, since the beginning of the aforementioned year. A dispensary for convalescents was built, with a capacity for 25 patients, on a hill with an excellent view of the sea.
