-It allows members of Congress to divide their work among smaller groups

Standing Committees
-Stand/continue from one Congress to the next
-House and Senate create their own standing committees and control their areas of jurisdiction
-Several subcommittees

Select Committees
-Temporary
-Study one specific issue and report their findings to the Senate or House

Joint Committees
-Made from members of the House and Senate
-Can be temporary or permanent 
-Act as a study group on a topic or bill

Conference Committees
-Temporary committee for when House and Senate have passed different versions of a bill
