Presentation of the text:
Marilyn Manson
Band, metallic rock
Scary looks
The poster-boy of fear
Criticising religion, society in his music
The text
Begs the question: “Who is to blame for the Columbine shooting?” - media
Focusses on the ‘biased’ media coverage of tragic events
Murder equals entertainment
Media blames idols for teens’ mistakes and wrongdoings
How to use our freedom
Children are growing up with media - bad for them
He just has an opinion (and present it in a rebelish way) - is that a bad thing?
He advocates diversity amongst teens

Theme:
Media's effect on people's minds
School shootings
Who’s to blame? (TV or Music) - Icon’s effect
Religion

3-line-summary:

Analysis - see Analysis of non-faction, from Angles:
Genre: An opinion piece - an editorial (his view on a subject of current interest)
Subject: Violence and guns in USA
Sender: Marilyn Manson
Receiver: The American population
Medium: This text is a one-way communication in which he brings forward his opinion
Context: He’s trying to “save his own ass” - The columbine shooting is not his fault, it’s medias
Rhetorical purpose - Why is it written?: To make people be critical for what they read and to persuade
In his arguments, he mainly uses pathos and a bit of logos
Ethos - by giving us confidence in him, because he knows a lot about former murderers
His headline is great, because it’s exactly what the whole text is about - (Columbine : Whose fault is it?)

Structure/composistion:

Style and language:
Informal language - he’s using words and expressions as (“Out of the blue”, bullshit, OK, “finger-pointing”) and so on
But he also use a lot of formal words, which make him sound clever, but not too clever, to be understood from teens - he’s not an unreachable authority
