This little girl is the perfect example of how every child wants to feel. I love children and all the other educators do too. Even if we can't hug our students, they need other adults to show them how much they care. They need us to solidify their importance, and further educate them.

Blessings:
1. We were able to spend time at home with our own children for 4 months!
2. Those in college were able to focus on college instead of being pulled in multiple directions.
3. We were able to figure out how to reprioritize.
4. It was really good to be able to slow down.
5. It was also good to take time to take care of ourselves and get a little pampering in on a regular basis.
6. One person was able to face time with every single student every week.

Struggles:
1. It was hard to realize we couldn't help families as well as we can when we are face to face in the building.
2. It was hard to contact a lot of the kids, and some we never heard from.
3. The packets were a struggle for some students to complete.
4. For some teachers, working at home was more stressful with hours of paperwork to complete!
5. Those of us who changed buildings struggle with the loss of never seeing their students again.
6. They ending was so abrupt and unexpected. We had no time to prepare for the loss.
7. It was hard to adjust to the new reality.
8. It was hard to communicate adequately via the computer with children you may not have known well before.
9. Poor Shiloh had just passed all the tests to be a school, but only was able to visit 2 days before we had to leave.
10. It was hard to see the high needs children not getting what we know they need.

I love people, and I want to hug you all, but I'll probably make you stay away from me.

I really liked this little story. I think this is important in all aspects of life but especially right now. I could spend all day worrying about the "what ifs" but that does nothing for me. I think it's important to focus on the things you can control. Definitely something I have to work on!

I definitely needed that for our current situation. It is SO hard for me to let even the little things go but this year especially I will have to. There are so many unknowns and so much uncertainty coming our way but I will now remember that it is all, "outside my boat".

With an ever changing situation such as this pandemic its easy to become overwhelmed with factors that are out of our control. This philosophy helps direct your efforts towards things that can be changed rather than be stuck on things you cannot.

I think its a great reminder for this upcoming school year where there will be challenges we've perhaps never thought about or seen before.

I am a worrier. I have had to let go for my kids though - my oldest has become a huge worrier with all the what ifs for the school year. We have had many talks about all the things we can't control. These talks have helped me! I like being in control, so this is definitely challenging for me :)

You can't control everything. If you focus on what is in your control that also changes your attitude. I like that it is a more positive way of looking at things.

I enjoyed this article because it reflects on something I learned a long time ago and try to remember daily-that you can not control what anyone else does, you can only control your own actions or reactions to something. Once you realize this, it is easier to handle tough situations with grace. We are dealing with crazy times, but we can react positively and can create an environment for success.

For the past week or so I've been wondering what's this going to look like, or what's that going to be like. But I can sit here and wonder and stress or I can just wait and see what it is that I CAN control and not what is out of my boat.

This article reminded me of how much time I spent planning my virtual lessons and then my students would cancel on me or no show up. At first I was a little sad, then after reflecting on the subject I found out that I can only do my best and be where I need to be... all with good intentions... everything else is out of my control "outside my boat"

I tend to worry about a lot of things, and I'm learning to trust the process...whether it's good or bad. Things may not always end up the way we want them to, and that's okay. That's what I have learned over the past couple of months. I know that there are certain things that I can't control, but there are things that are important and that need my attention. Yes, the future is scary, but there are solutions. Even if things don't make sense, I believe that everything has a purpose.

Very interesting article. I find it hard to accept situations that you can't control. It's happening to us at the moment. But I know we will find a way to learn from it.

I’ve been taught that you can let things out of your control change your attitude towards the day or you can accept it and move on. It's very easy to get caught up in scrolling on the internet and become worried with all the negativity that is out there. There is nothing we can do about the virus and all that is going on outside. What we can focus on is the kids that are about to enter our school who are most likely feeling scared and lonely and are needing our support during this very hard time. We are absolutely needed and we must be the calm in the storm for them and also for our own families. This is going to be very hard to do, but if we all are there for each other I think it can be done.

My Why

My why hits within my household. I am big on advocating for special needs due to the fact that my twin brother was considered special ed when we were growing up. However, my dad felt that the teachers "made up" his disability and that they labeled him because they couldn't deal with him. In fact, my dad would say that when they called him fro IEP meetings he would just mute his phone and not listen because he didn't believe my twin was SPED (not that it matters if he was, we still love him). However, due to that I wanted to be a SPED teacher because I want to be that person for students who might not have someone to advocate for them. I have a cousin whose parents have done the same thing and just have ignored his disabilities and give in to him because it's "easier that way." My why has been the same for years and as I continue to encounter students who need someone to advocate for them, I will always have a why! My heart belongs with students, especially younger ones as I have a daycare background and I just love little kids.

I guess this is a good "someone". This is my cat, Jack. There is an outsider looking in at him, but they are social distancing!

He is my why! He is the reason that I wear a mask, don't go out often, and social distance. For those who don't know, he is a cancer survivor but still receives chemo every two months, hence his immune system is low. He is also a high school teacher. This transition back to school has caused a whole lot of anxiety in our house but we know we have awesome colleagues and friends that understand when we say no to something.

I was label LD in 3rd grade and held back....after I had change from a private school who kicked me out saying the could not teach me. My 3rd grade teacher Cheryl Mitchell did all that she could to get me the help I needed to learn and build me up! She also made sure to develop a strong relationship with me! I now can say that I am Mrs. Mitchell!!! I love my kids and do my best to teach them they way they learn best by building a strong relationship with them! This photo is of Jennifer Anima one of my 2020 Seniors this year. She was just at my house last week visiting me! She is just one of my former Kindergarten students I still talk with and check up on!

I'm a hugger. My students are huggers. Its going to be hard to not hug. I had one first grader run up and hug me at the end of school in the spring. It's instinct when they see you because we have always offered greeting options for them. I wonder how they will do, especially the little ones. Human interaction is so important, we will have to be creative in the way we show our affection. I'm ready to see everyone and get back into some kind of normal.

Growing up I only had 1 teacher that actually did what was best for students. The rest were not there for the kids. It was so disheartening. My why is the kids. I will always do what is best for each and every kiddo. I WILL be that teacher that they know they can count on, trust, and love for years to come for every single student of mine. They become "my kids" over the year we have together and I won't ever take that for granted.

Every night when I read to my daughters, I think about the kids who are not being read to. I think about the kids who don't have positive role models or someone who will be their cheerleader. Cuddling with my babies, going on a walk, taking a nap (lol like that ever happens), having an adult beverage with my hubby, getting pedicures with my tribe, dancing and singing at the top of my lungs with my babies and hubs!

I was a gymnast in my younger days, so yoga seemed like a logical next step for an aging, stressed out mama and teacher. I rediscovered yoga in March and have committed to a daily practice. I haven't missed one yet! It's definitely yogi-speak, but it really does center me and remind me that I can't control everything, but I can strengthen my body and mind.

I share this two moments because every time I am feeling anxiety for everything that is happening around us, I look at my children thinking how they must be feeling, and they are always being caring, kind, and loving towards everyone they can. As a mother it calms me down and it makes me feel like everything is going to be okay.

Giving students encouragement and building their potential fills joy in my heart. It makes me so happy to see students take knowledge that they have learned and go out into the world and use/express their learning and knowledge in various ways. For example: Designing and creating an interior space using the knowledge of the elements and principles of design (painting a mural on a wall or expressing oneself in a beautiful picture.
Everyone has the ability to express and create! Everyone has the potential to soar high and succeed in their endeavors!!!!

I make sure that I eat a fruit every day that contains vitamin C, and I do eat my spinach! Here is the reason---vitamin c boosts your immune system, and spinach gives me nutrients as well as extra iron to keep me going!!!--I do eat the canned stuff!!!!
