Puritans believed in Calvinism and in the pure simplicity of the religion. They made everything simple such as clothes, food, and etc. Puritans settled in the area of Massachusetts after religious persecution started in England. Puritans aimed to create a theocracy government and city called "City upon a Hill." The city would blend the church and state together and create a utopia state in the name of God.

Puritans created Calvinism, a new religion that built upon the ideas of John Calvin. Calvinism had the belief that everybody was a sinner, no matter the action. People also believed that the human race was split into two; the elected and the unregenerate. Unless you felt God's grace, there was no way to change your predestination or know if you were either elected or an unregenerate. This caused people to act as if they were the elected by acting as a good person.

Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem

Many puritans believed that Satan existed and hired witches and wizards to do his bidding. Many were on edge because of this belief and blamed Satan for natural causes that couldn't be explained. Foreign influences (like Tituba) on bored teenagers caused them to act unusual in front of others making them seem like witches. Many accused also confessed to being a witch because that was the only allowed option in order to live. Because everybody was on edge, many people used this as a chance to accuse their opponents as being witches whenever there was a feud.

The Salem Witch Trials started with Betty Parris and her playmates when they started acting unusually. When the doctor claimed that there was something wrong spiritually with their body, the girls started putting the blame onto other women for being witches. After this incident, hundreds have trials were held for similar accusations. Nineteen men and women were actually hung through being convicted of witchcraft. Witch trials similar to this have happened in recent history with communists and terrorists.

Before Puritans created their own religious state, they were part of the Catholic Church of England. Queen Elizabeth and King Charles II were ruling England during this time period. But the puritans thought of the Catholic Church as too impure and wanted to return to the simplicity of the religion. When Queen Elizabeth died, King Charles II dissolved the parliament and any connection between the church and state. King Charles II later executed those who did not support the new Anglican Church, forcing Puritans to be driven out of the country.
