There are many skills that I learned throughout this course. The first of these skills is that I am now able to more easily detect a language or nationality of a person just by listening to a description of the language (such as the activities done in class). Other than that I have also been able to learn some skills such as the ability to take apart a word I do not understand and try to understand it based on the structure and language of origin of that word. There is also the skill of detecting if someone is lying or being deceitful based on linguistic characteristics rather than just the physiological ones. Overall I believe I have learned a few useful features, some of which are used more often than others. While some of the skills I used may not be used often, it is still a great benefit to know them.

What I learned

This course is very useful for information and knowledge. I can honestly say that coming into this course I pretty much knew nothing about linguistics like I do now. Concepts such as loanwords or language families were very new to me. It was also very interesting to learn about the origins of some languages like how the Jutes, Angles and Saxons invasions slowly led to the formation of the English we speak today, as well as some other languages that were simply constructed by a person such as Armenian and Korean. In terms of actual knowledge such as history and concrete information, there was some of that in the course, however I believe the real value lies in the concepts that were learned such as how to reconstruct a language or the how morphology, syntax, semantics, etc. come together to form a language. Overall I have learned a lot since this is a 3 credit course, however I believe the knowledge of concepts is where I have really benefitted

To Amena

Dear Dr. Amena, it is very obvious that you are very passionate about linguistics and languages. It is also apparent that you are very passionate for us to learn as well and I believe this is why you try to make the course fun for us. This for me is the greatest strength of the course and yourself as well, that you do not simply teach the material as slides that should be completed but also try to engage us in activities and fun things to do. I believe that if we had studied the same material but simply as slides rather than the way they were discussed in class, it would be much more boring for us to study, and we would not like the content. Since we are engaged however, it makes it so that when we study we have already done an activity with these concepts so they stick much more easily. Thank you Dr. Amena for trying genuinely to make the course more engaging and also for taking our opinion in things about the course such as deadlines and exam dates.
