The ART of a Picture book

Have you ever picked up a picture book to read to a child? Chances are, if you're a teacher, you pick up multiple picture books in a day to read aloud and share with children. But have you ever sat back and thought about what actually goes into making that picture book or even the fact that many people consider that picture book a piece of art? These are just a couple of the ideas we are going to discuss during this padlet discussion. I can't wait to hear your thoughts back on it. It's going to be an interesting ride.

Throughout my readings, I found it fascinating how little I actually knew about these books that I am picking up and reading every day in my Kindergarten classroom. Through the production of a book, who do you think works directly together? Does the author work with the illustrator and do they both go through the editing process together?

Can you believe that the likely hood of the author and the illustrator working together is very slim? The author writes the story and then sends it off to be edited. Once a final transcript has been produced, the illustrator can begin his process. The illustrator doesn't even need the author's input or opinion before starting! I found this idea so bizarre.

Pages and pages

The illustrator works by creating thumbnail sizes of the pictures that will go on each page and then works on making a layout. The pictures must fit within 32 pages and that needs to fit the text too! Have you ever stopped to count the amount of pages in a picture book? While most picture books contain 32 pages, all picture books must contain an amount that is divisible by 8. I'm curious to hear your input on this. Why do you think picture books must have an amount of pages that is always divisible by 8?

Are pictures placed strategically?

Pictures are definitely placed in a certain place for a specific reason. Sipe goes on to explain that the layout of the pictures in a book can completely change the mood of a story. What is the desired outcome? Suspense? Excitement? A surprise? Where pictures are placed in a story can affect all of these feelings.

syn - er - gy: a combined action or operation (Webster,2018)

You may be asking yourself what in the world does synergy have to do with picture books. Sipe uses this word to describe the relationship that pictures play with words in a story. He believes there cannot simply be one without the other in a picture book. The words guide us and the pictures tell more of the story. It reminds me of what it would be like to watch a movie without the film score to accompany it.

What is your opinion on this? Do you believe we can have one without the other the have the FULL effect of a picurebook?

Many people believe that illustrations are not simply just drawings or paintings but rather they are works of art and can be compared to sculptures and famous paintings. Many would also argue that illustrations in pictures have a benefit that typical pieces of art do not have; they can be reproduced.

As illustrations and the art of graphic design becomes more popular, more people are choosing to become illustrators for picture books as they are recognized as artists in this field now. Do you agree that illustrators are as gifted and talented as famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci or Pablo Picasso?
