Compromise of 1850

This compromise involved the territories of California, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah. There was calls to further the extension of slavery to the west, while antislavery activists were severely against it. After the death of Zachary Taylor, who postponed the dilemma, his successor than saw to plan a way to satisfy both sides. By declaring California a free state, and giving New Mexico and Utah the right to right slavery into law, talks of secession from the union ceased for the time being. With the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, there was further discord among the states concerning the new territory. Only serving as a temporary plan to prevent secession, while planting even more cycles of conflict for the near future.

Prior to Abraham Lincoln's official announcement as U.S president, there was severe resentment for the republican party that was formed a mere 4 years ago. A party that stated the want to limit any further expansion of slavery into new territories. With the newly claimed states being introduced into the U.S, the South's desire to expand its trade increased along with it. Further imposing on acts such as the Fugitive Slave Act to continue their trade and profits. Thus causing further conflict between the North and the South, even causing a delay in the election.

Fugitive Slave Act (1850)

The Fugitive Slave Act had already existed before the revision in 1850. In the year 1793, Congress had passed the Fugitive Slave Act, allowing owners of the enslaved and "agents" to search in the free states. However, this was met with retaliation, as the citizens of the North saw it as a means of stalking the northern states and permitting legal kidnapping. Thus leading to aiding the enslaved on their way to freedom. After the many years of the passage of this act, to quiet calls for secession, Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. This further imposed on commoners the penalties suffered from not aiding in the capture of slaves. While providing further reason for agents to capture the slaves. This caused a cycle of constant riots and opposition by antislavery activists. The opposition facing the act was only ceased at the start of the Civil war in 1864.
