The Queen of Savoy named Margherita was visiting Italy, tired of french food she wanted to try the local cuisine. So she was given a pizza by a pizzaiolo named Raffaele Esposito, who named his creation after her in honor of her visit in 1889.

The Pizza was made to represent the colors of the Italian flag, the red tomatoes, green basil and white mozzarella.

RED- The tomatoes were already used in Naples as early as the 1700s, however they first came to Italy by the Spaniards as early as the 1600s. First they were suspected to be poisonous, and were used as ornamental plants. Once the toxicity rumor was disproven, they began to be used in multiple different recipes. The toxicity rumors were due to tomatoes acidity absorbing lead from their lead based plates and killing the wealthy aristocrats who could afford the plates. The poor common people who ate off of wooden plates, were unaffected, leading to suspicion on the fruit.

GREEN- The basil was first recorded in the Father of Medicine Hippocrates (between 375 and 350 BCE) under the name Basilikon in ancient greek. The name was translated into ôkimon, which is also found in the Historia Plantarum by the Father of Botany. It was also stated as having medicinal properties like soothing a scorpion sting and that 'no mans mind has been affect by it'. It is native to India, Indonesia and some areas of Australia. But through an ancient version of the silk road, it traveled up and through china and down into Africa and eventually into Europe. https://www.ahpa.org/herbs_in_history_basil

WHITE - First documented in the 12th century when monks in the monastery of Saint Lorenzo in Capua gave them to travelers. Its originally made with buffalo's milk, but was switched to cows milk once transported to the Americas. There is no specific origin documented of how mozzarella was created, 'legend' has it that a few cheese curds fell into a pail of hot watered and was created into the beloved cheese known today. It is also commonly eaten with tomatoes!

Cheese, a tribe of the middle east, used to store milk in animals while traveling, which slowly curdled into cheese, creating this ideas of cheese. Ancient Egyptians, were the first to turn it into a practice of creating cheese, having ideas of religious and medical practices with said cheese.

The bread, was an idea that dates as far back as Pompeii. They created rounds of breads, with triangle cuts in it, with burnt cheese sometimes on the surface.

Tomato's were not something that came from the Americas and were not transferred and grown in Spain until 1550, but the earliest published recipe appeared in Antonio Latini's 1692 cookbook.

But going back to the sixth century B.C in Greece, there was a cult of mathematicians, that believed heavily in Pythagorean theories. They use to bake cheese pizza's created of only cheese and crust, no sauce, since it wasn't yet discovered or thought of. They would bake these pizzas were baked and consumed as a religious practice, and were carved with the symbol of Pi. Claimed to be the most potent symbol of this mathematico-religious cult.

Pizza originated from flatbread in Egypt around 4,000 BCE. Later on, Italy made the term "Pizza" from their word pinsa which means flatbread. But otherwise origin is still unknown. As, during our search we started off with the result of Pizza being from Naples, Italy. Until we searched deeper and discovered that they came up with the name "Pizza" from their word pinsa. Which then led us to our search with who came up with Egypt. Yet, other groups also had their own version of flatbread, so what is the real origin of pizza or should I say flatbread?

According to Russell Cobb's "The Paradox of Authenticity in a Globalized World," the word pizza comes from central Italy. Pizza as a concept, therefore, is of Italian origin. To label anything "pizza" subsequently derives from Italian linguistics. Whether the contents of what is now called pizza originated in places outside of Italy, and whether what is now known as pizza existed before its label is insignificant to the argument that "pizza" originated in Italy. It is Italian.
