The invention "E-Dermis" or electronic dermis has the potential to change healthcare and the lives of amputees. The researchers at John Hopkins University have created an electronic skin to be used with modern upper extremity prosthetics has the ability to replicate touch, sensation, and pain. The integration of the dermis sensors to the prosthetic can allow amputees to actually feel objects that are being handled, as well as differences between them (John Hopkins University, 2018). This invention can greatly improve not only dexterity and ability, but also restore a sense of normalcy and quality of life.

The highly sensitive sensors are designed to mimic the human body and biology. The "neuromorphic model" reacts and simulates just like peripheral nerves would with our natural skin (Osborn, et al., 2018). For example, it can detect a light or heavy object, as well as sharp or round objects. This can be transmitted through the body by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), allowing the patient to feel the sensation being transmitted.

I believe that this technology has the ability to change lives. It can restore all of the sensation of human touch that was thought to be lost. This new prosthetic ability can allow patients to complete tasks that were no longer thought possible. It can significantly decrease disability for these individuals. However, I would still like to see the ability and availability increase to all patient populations.
