"The stubborn note is bossy; it takes you over. It puts you on notice. It is a marker, a reminder: wake up, get free of your momentum, you have somewhere to be right now. The difference between this and true repetition is that repetition puts a spell on you. The stubborn note take a spell off you." - (Ratliff, pg. 75)

The idea of a single note contradicts conventional song structures. A conventional song structure will direct your attention to the hook and chorus and will work in tandem to lead the listener on a roller-coaster ride to satisfaction. In chapter six Ratliff uses the example of Thelonious Monk's "Thelonious" to show how a single note can be used for symbolic purposes. In this particular song Thelonious Monk uses the single note to represent his stoic presence in the world. His backing band is chaotic and is representative of the surrounding world while Thelonious Monk's monotone playing is a constant, never shifting figure. This technique can also prove authenticity in certain musical scenes such as krautrock or noise rock. It can also establish a mood when used in a repetitive fashion, cut tension when sequenced behind a particularly tense preamble and finally provide clear contrast in musical ideas and emotions. An example of the symbolic use of "a single note" can be heard in Brian Eno's "The True Wheel." "The True Wheel" is about the inevitability of homogenized cultures and time. The majority of the song is a bouncy synthpop trip that details a personification of a train wheel. It eventually harmonises into a single note roughly around the 5:00 mark. This harmonisation starts at 4:35 and represents the said homogenization. One final example of the power of a single note can be heard in the live version of Thee Oh See's "Contraption." What separates this cut from the studio version is the single note solo that starts at the 2:36 mark. This solo is obviously powerful because of the clear contrast from the previous "motorik" beat that the band grooves with for the previous two minutes.
