Callisto was discovered on January Seventh, 1610 by galileo galilei she was discovered along with three other moons named Lo, Europa, and Ganymede. This was the first time moons had been found orbiting other planets then the earth. Discovering these planets were a vital step to figuring out that the planets orbited the sun instead of the earth

Originally Galileo named Callisto "Jupiter IV" as she was the fourth moon, and Callisto would be called this for a couple centuries. it wasn't until mid-1800s that the four Galilean moons would be given the names "Lo", "Europa", "Ganymede", and "Callisto". Callisto was named after the beautiful daughter of Lycaon, who became a huntress of Artemis.

Callisto is the most heavily cratered object in our solar system. she is thought by many people and scientists to be a long dead world, with hardly any geologic activity on its surface. In fact, Callisto is the ONLY body greater then 1000 km in diameter that has shown absolutely NO signs of undergoing extensive since the impacts formed on its surface when it first formed. with it's surface being about four billion years old, Callisto is the OLDEST surface in our solar system
