The teacher uses posters like the "An Ocean of Words" for her word wall, "Rising Through the Reef" to organize students' reading abilities, and "Get Hooked on a Good Book". I believe this provides a very engaging and colorful classroom while sticking to a concise and organized theme. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Starfish Student</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sticking with the ocean theme, every few weeks, my host teacher pick a student to be the starfish student/or star student. The rest of the students then write letters to the starfish student. I thought this was a great idea to make each student feel special and important throughout the course of the year. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Reading Groups</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although it would not work in every school, New Haven's 3rd through 5th graders get tested for their current reading level. Then, the teachers then split up reading groups based off reading level regardless of the grade level. I think this helps keep student's more motivated, as they are working with students on a similar level. It also helps the teachers who feel the pressure of teaching a bunch of students on different reading levels.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Handling Unmotivated Students</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One of the students was having a rough day. After being told to do something, he put his hoodie over his head. The teacher then told him to remove his hood. He did not comply and then when he got back to class he refused to start on his work. I remember that back when I was in school if we were told something and if we did not do it we would be told to go to the principal's office. However, I saw the teacher go talk to the student and he slowly got some work done. You could tell he still was in a bad mood. I later asked the teacher what she did to handle this. She informed me that you cannot always send students to the principal. She said that this student has bad days often so she is tough with him. She does not and cannot believe every story he tells her and must make sure that he keeps on track. She is a firm but kind teacher, and she does not let students walk all over her. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Brain Breaks</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>At New Haven, the P.E. teacher comes around to classrooms on different days to do brain breaks with the students. These are learning games and sometimes they are active. On days that the P.E. teacher does not come in my host teacher uses brain breaks on GoNoodle to get the students up and active between reading and math. Usually it involves dancing of some sort. I believe this is a great way to allow the students to be active and take a break from learning. </div>]]></description>

         <title>&amp;nbsp;Monday Morning Circle Time</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Every Monday, my host teacher allows each student time to describe what they did over their weekend. The students love sharing with their fellow students and teacher what they have done. I think this is a great way to make each student feel valued and important. I also believe it is a good way to get to know and establish a good relationship between teacher and student. This is something that I would like to implement in my future classroom.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Lack of diversity </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have learned and seen a lot of great things in my host teachers classroom. However, one thing that I have noticed is that her books lack diversity. For example, in the bottom corner of the picture you can see my host teacher has Christmas books available. I do know for a fact that at least one of her students does not celebrate Christmas, so I would like to see books available for that students culture. In my future classroom, I want each of students' to have their cultures feel important and valued in my classroom.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Morning Work Folder</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Every morning, my host teacher puts a morning worksheet of some sort on the students' desks. She uses this work as a warm up to get the students ready for the morning. The work might be a review of what they have been learning or as a teaser for what they might be learning that day. Some of the students at New Haven get breakfast and so they can eat and work on the work before actual class starts. The students turn in the work whenever they finish and those who do not finish can put it in their morning work folder to work on later that day or later in the week. About once a week, my host teacher provides catch up days where they work on all their unfinished morning work in their folder. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Attention Getters </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My host teacher primarily uses the attention grabber, "Class, class" and they reply, "Yes, yes." She does have other variations of attention grabbers that she uses. I feel like attention grabbers are fun and successful ways to let the students know that they need to stop talking and pay attention to the teacher. I found this picture of various attention grabbers that I believe would be fun to use in my future classroom. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Classroom Jobs </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Each week, the student's receive new classroom jobs. Jobs include; line leader, door holder, lights person, pet/plant helper, etc. These jobs really create a cohesive classroom where every student feels important and useful. On Monday's, my host teacher introduces the jobs and I can see the excitement on the students' faces when they receive their new jobs. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Rising Through the Reef Sticker System </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My host teacher uses a sticker reward system. Every student starts out as a tadpole, and then after ten stickers the students move up "Through the Reef". The entire class also has a notecard for stickers. They earn these stickers as a class when they are exhibiting desired behaviors, like being quiet in the hallways. At the class moves up "Through the Reef", they get rewards at each progression. My host teacher informed me that usually they receive an extra recess as a reward. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Taking Away Recess</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On various occasions during my field experience, I witnessed my host teacher take away a student's recess time to finish classwork. This caused a lot of anger and emotions in the students. Most of the students that were losing their recess were the students that need time to run and get their energy out. I have learned through this that I do not want to be the teacher that takes recess away. I would prefer to work in extra time during the day that my students can finish their work. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Desk Arrangements</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For the majority of my time in my field placement, the seating arrangement did not change. However, on my last few weeks, I noticed that the desk arrangements changed. My host teacher noticed that some students were unable to work next to each other. Also there are four students that consistently talk, regardless of who they sit next to. My teacher sat those four students together, however, if they are talking to each other then they are required to split up their desks. Then they are sitting by themselves and are unable to talk during class. As a teacher, I believe it is important to figure out which seating arrangement is best suited for each student. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Check Yourself </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My host teacher uses the term, "Check Yourself" as a way to remind students to check to make sure their voices are off and their bodies are turned forward. After she says check yourself, all of the students immediately refocus their attention back on the teacher. I think it is great that my host teacher has a variety of different ways to regain her students' focus. </div>]]></description>

         <title>S-T-O-P Stop </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is another way I have noticed that my host teacher uses to regain her students' attention. She will yell out, "S-T-O-P that spells?" Then the students yell out, "STOP". This signifies to the student that they need to stop everything that they are doing and that they need to pay attention to the teacher. I do not think all grade levels would respond well to attention getters. However, the 3rd graders in my host class respond really well to these. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Flexible Seating</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are two students in my host classroom that are served under 504 plans for ADHD. These students use flexible seating to help them with their inattentiveness and hyperactivity. The bar under the desk is used so the student can swing his legs on the bar. I have heard really great research on flexible seating. As a future teacher, I would like to do some of my own research to weigh the cost of the seating to the pros and the cons of flexible seating. </div>]]></description>

         <title>New Haven Pledge</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Each morning, the students recite both the Pledge of the Allegiance and New Haven's School Pledge. The pledge is, "I am a STAR learner. I am safe, respectful, and responsible." This is a great way to remind all New Haven students to be good learners. That they also need to be safe, respectful, and responsible. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Rule Reminders </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my previous 10 artifacts, I mentioned how I believed it was great that all the class rules were displayed around the classroom. It was my belief that this would assure that the students knew what was expected of them. Even though the rules are displayed around the classroom, I have found my teacher using reminders and prompting. For example, when all the students were talking over the teacher she said, "Remind me of rule number 2." All of the students replied, "Raise your hand for permission to speak." I think that these reminders are a great way to make sure the students know what is expected of them. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Handling Students&#39; with IEPs</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have learned a lot of amazing things from my host teacher. One thing that I have noticed, is that my host teacher is not always understanding of students' with IEPs. There is one student in particular that sometimes asks inappropriate questions. On various occasions, I have seen her roll her eyes at the student or comment to other adults that he is strange. Unfortunately, I have noticed a few teachers throughout different schools react in similar manners. I want to be a special education teacher, so I want other teachers to be aware that some students cannot control their differences. I also hope that in the future all my students feel valued and important, despite any differences. </div>]]></description>
