What do we learn about Salva's life and culture in Chapter 1? How is it similar or different from your own? Be sure to include the location of your class in your response! You can write it in the name section or title section before you submit. We want to learn about the world, so knowing where you're communicating from is important.

What do we learn about Salva’s life and culture in Chapter 1 ?

Salva’s life is torn, lost and is full of terror. There are thorns that lay on the ground and they are extremely hard to dodge. Salva lives in a small old village, and when he turned 10, he got sent to school. Salva’s school is very different to others. Salva has attended school since the age of 10 and has gone ever since. There are no girls in the school because both genders are treated differently. Girls have to stay home and learn how to keep house.

The days were ordinary and everyone was happy, but within minutes, it all changed. Bright blue sky melted into clouds of dust and smoke. Salva’s life turned around in a glimpse. Devastation filled the air, and the screams of terror echoed through everyone’s ears. What was to come ?

How is it similar or different from your own ?

My life is very different to Salva’s. My area is a safe place and there are no bombs, gun fires or anything. Both girls and boys go to school around the ages of, 4,5 and 6. There are no thorns or anything laying on the ground and everyone has shoes that are safe to walk around in. Some girls learn how to keep house but they mostly learn when they are a bit older. Both Salva and I go to school. Salva’s village has to travel on foot, just to get water for his family. We don’t have to do that. We get to eat whatever we want but all he gets to eat are peanuts and he gets to drink a bowl of milk after school.

This book has made me realize how fortunate I am to have running (clean) water at my disposal any time I want. I feel like after reading this book, I will have a renewed outlook on life. A fresh look at how much I truly have.

I can relate to Salva in some ways. He is just a regular person with hopes and dreams. He loves his family and enjoys the simple things in life. In many ways, we are very different. I have never known a life of fear and war like he has just been introduced to. I can't imagine having to leave my family without so much as a goodbye. I am eager to see where this journey takes Salva in the chapters ahead.
