After watching the three examples of contemporary theatre performances I observed that all of the productions consisted of slower and more story-filled music and songs. I think each group of characters sang their stories and not just random lyrics that did not actually mean anything. Most of the characters from these clips expressed themselves through slow songs, while telling how they feel.

Something unique to the theater and drama genre is that sense of communication during song. It’s much more powerful in song form when a character says something. In Dear Evan Hansen, having that romantic ballad “If I Could Tell Her” instead of just saying what he’s talking about is a lot more powerful. Almost like in The Odyssey, where the graphic novel format expands upon the scene.

They use their surroundings to accommodate to the mood, further enhancing the feeling that is trying to be created. For example, in Hamilton, the music is very upbeat, allowing the audience to understand that this isn't a melancholy/sentimental play (unlike Dear Evan Hansen)

The first observation I noticed is that in Drama, a lot of emotions and actions and storyline aren’t spoken but portrayed through body movements. Such as when they show a clip of Evan Hansen about to go up to someone and then very quickly turn around. That little action shows that Evan isn’t confident in himself or rather in the situation of going up to others.

The three productions are variants from books and movies because their sets are smaller and when transitioning a story from a book to a play or movie, you may have to cut out some unnecessary things. As well, the three productions also contain more music and more emotion because of this.
