After the collapse of the USSR in the early 1990s, Russia withdrew food support from North Korea, and there was a shocking famine across the country, leading to up to 2 million deaths. The North Korean government blamed this on the need to defend the country against the USA, using propaganda to convince its people. This graph shows the infant mortality rate compared to Vietnam - one indication of the suffering of the North Korean people.

19) The above map shows a rough estimate of the number of people who would need humanitarian assistance in different parts of North Korea. It shows that the US and South Korean militaries would need to enter the North to provide aid, maintain order so it can be distributed, and prepare for the reunification of the Koreas. The collapse of North Korea, then, would mean a humanitarian crisis in which millions of refugees are projected to try to stream across the Chinese border — and the likely presence of a rival military presence right on China’s border. Therefore, China can’t credibly threaten to cut off trade in a way that would seriously undermine the government in Pyongyang without risking disaster, and Kim Jong Un knows it

12) the map below shows just one of the many prison camps used in North Korea to hold citizens. Amnesty International estimated that in 2016 120,000 people were held in camps such as these where people are subject to “rape, infanticide, torture, deliberate starvation, forced labor, and executions.” These camps are used by the North Korean government to control and scare citizens into bending to their will by not only taking those accused of crimes against the government, but their families as well by association.

The location isn't identified so the North Korean government is unaware that they needs to cover up the evidence of war crimes there.
4) By the end of the War the Soviet Union had control over the North of Korea and the Unites States had control over the South of Korea. The post WWII division proved unstable, with both the Communist North and the Capitalist South claiming to be the legitimate government of Korea. In June 1950, with support from Joseph Stalin, North Korea's leader Kim Il Sung invaded the South. The North nearly gained control over the South. However the US intervened, with endorsement from the United Nations.
