Maluma (2016) Cuatro babys [Song] 4 babys [Album] Sony latin.

The song cuatro babys by colombian singer Maluma featuring Noriel, Bryant Myers and Jhun and produced by Santana the Golden Boy was released in October 14, 2016. Even though this song has won various awards in different parts of the world, the song has had many controversies. The song has been branded as misogyny and especially as denigrating woman, In some places people had tried to take it off from some platforms. This source has authority because the song is from one of the biggest urban singers in the world. Also, this source has relevance because it fit perfectly with my research. I think by analyzing this song especially the song lyrics would fit in my research because I would also like to talk about how the controversie in some way or another helped reggaeton to get more followers.

Luis Fonsi (2019) Despacito [Song] vida[Album] Universal latin.

With over seven billion views and forty two million likes on youtube despacito is one of the most famous songs in history. January 13, 2017 was the release date of this massive hit by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee, even though Luis Fonsi is not one of the pioneers of reggaeton or one of the new faces of this same genre Daddy Yankee is consider one of the persons that helped most to the genre in the beginnings. Then Justin Bieber did the remix singing in spanish and that was the key to enter in to english speaking community. I think this article has currency because is one of the latest massive hits of reggaeton and it only has 4 years since the release date. Also it has authority because Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee are recognized by the latino community. It fit my needs because this song is proof that reggaeton has had a huge boom in the world and reached many parts of the world.

J Balvin (2017) Mi Gente [Song] Vibras[Album] Scorpio Universal Latin.

Mi gente song by one of the greatest singers of Colombia, J balvin and Willy William from France. The song was released in June 2017 but in September trough October of the same year another seven remixes were released with other artist like Beyonce, Steve Aoki, etc. This source has authority because as I said before J Balvin is one of the biggest reggaetoneros in history. Also, this source has Currency because is from 2017 and until this you can hear this song in parties. I think this song helps in my research because this is one of reggaeton most famous songs. This song has almost 3 billion views on youtube and 15 million likes.

Bell, R. (2019, June 12). You Love Reggaeton, But Do You Know Where it Came From? Retrieved December 15, 2020, from https://www.shondaland.com/live/a27892003/history-of-reggaeton/

Reggeaton first started in Panama when West Indians came to help construct the Panama canal and merge reggae, and Dance Hall named Spanish reggae. This sound flew to Puerto Rico, where it was influenced by hip hop and renamed reggeaton. Even though politicians and police disapproved at the begging because of the sexualized and violent content, the genre continued to grow and with some female referents. This article is accurate because the majority of things are backed with evidence and some numbers. This article is also current because it is from 2019. This helps me a lot with my research project because I can see how a mix of the other two genres created reggaeton. Also, I can see how the genre had an explosion even though it was not accepted at the begging.

Takmakova View all posts by Elena Takmakova →, E., & View all posts by Elena Takmakova →.

Jackson, A. (2021). This campaign shows the real message of reggaetón music.

Retrieved 3 February 2021, from https://www.pri.org/stories/campaign-shows- real-message-reggaeton-music

This article written by the Global Post breaking news writer Allison Jackson, shows a completely new perspective on the Reggaetón genre and what it really means to the marginalized communities. She points out the type of language that is used in many of the songs in the genre that could be categorized as “auditive pornography”, which serves as a counterargument for many who are opposed to the massive effects the music has on the people. The songs mostly talk about sexual assault and violence towards women, drugs, sex, etc. Jackson interviews people from Colombian and Nicaragua who are currently participating in campaign to eliminate this genre, and they state that since most of the listeners are kids and teenagers they might interpret these songs too literally; therefore we could be encouraging this types of conducts instead of giving them the power of being heard. This article presents the opposite perspective given in the two articles above which enriches my investigation and helps me see other points of view that I need to take into account in order to see the real effect of this genre.

Fajardo, J. (2021). The global revolution in Latin music and its social impact. Retrieved

3 February 2021, from https://www.equaltimes.org/the-global-revolution-in-latin?lang=en#.YBoRVS2xDfZ

Jose Fajardo, a recognized Colombian journalist who has dedicate his career to analysis of different cultural and social issues, describes different specific situations where Reggaetón was used as a form of expression and opposition to political decisions made all over the world. One of the situations described was the American presidential election of 2016 where Donald Trump was proclaimed as president elect. When the last ballot came out Benito Martinez, (stage name Bad Bunny) who has charted 14 songs on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, openly stated his inconformity with the election. This action from the reggaetón icon was an impulse to generate a worldwide movement showing and giving power to those who historically have not being listened to. This also happened in Latin America during the 1900s when dictatorships started to rule over certain countries and Spanish rock served as opposition songs. This shows that reggaetón has served as a “united force” to give a voice to the subaltern communities and therefore clear the path to a fair democracy. This article has being crucial for my investigation since it shows that today this genre has played a significant role in the world’s most important events. Songs and artist from this musical category do not only empower people but also shows the power of unity.

Leight, E. (2018, November 15). Nowadays, many English-speaking artists want to collaborate with reggaeton stars to make great connections and marketing. Persons like Bad bunny or J Balvin have cross barriers and left the doors opened for the other Latin future stars to collaborate with the English speaking industry. This article has authority because it is from Rolling Stones magazine that focuses on music culture. Also, the article has a purpose that is to inform how Latin music is stronger than ever. This helps my research process because it talks about the peak the genre is currently going thru. Secondly, how the effort of some artist leaves a brighter future for the other generations.

Baldizon, R. (2018, September 30). How is Reggaeton Changing the World? One of the secondary effects is the similarity in the new Latin genre with some of the US genres, for example, reggeaton. The most significant factors of this relatively new genre for becoming what it is are the catchy beats and the lyrics' liberty; having such freedom in the lyrics also creates controversy. This article has currency because it is from 2018, so it is not old. Also, this article is relevant because it talks about how reggeaton is changing the world. The article helps my research project because it lets me see the significant factors of this genre's tremendous growth over the past years.
