Introduction to the Aztecs

I am the leader of the Aztec's. The way we do things around here is if someone were try to invade our land, we would either use them as a sacrifice, or just kill them. We have a specific way we human sacrifice people as Aztecs. We have a sacrificial stone that our sacrifices would be placed on upon their death. After they would be placed on the stone we would use a flint stone to cut through the chest or abdomen of our sacrifice. Once the chest of abdomen was open, the men preforming the ceremony would pull out the beating heart from the humans chest and hold it to the sky. The reason that the men would hold the heart up to the sky was to honor their sun God. There were many different rituals that were done with human sacrificing among the Aztecs that were meant to "nourish their gods to give them power." My men are strong savage warriors who aren't afraid of anything. We are known for our outstanding agriculture, hieroglyphic writing, complex calendar, and our famous temples and pyramids.

First Impressions of the Spaniards

Usually, we would sacrifice or kill anyone to come onto our land. When the Spaniards first arrived we were not so sure of their appearance or why they were here. We were amazed of their pale colored skins and beards on their faces. When we first saw the man who we came to know as Hernan Cortez, he came with a small group of his men and did not seem aggressive at first sight. We saw the Spanish explorers admiring our clean, well put together city and how amazed they were with it. They were looking for wealth, but we did not know that when they first arrived. They held all sorts of weapons that we were unfamiliar with that were kind of threatening to us. Before we made any contact with us we were very unsure of who they were and what they wanted from us. When they approached us we saw that they were much taller than us in proportion. Us Aztecs have a short stocky build that the Spanish men did not resemble.

Is He Our God?

Us Aztecs have over 200 Gods that we honor in our culture. We nourish them by giving them human sacrifices. When Cortez first approached us we were in disbelief of who he was and how he looked. Cortez was pale with a beard who resembled someone we had been waiting for. This person was our God who had the name, Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl is an extremely important God to us Aztecs and we misunderstood the arrival of Cortez. We asked Cortez if he was sent as our God to be among us and he agreed that, yes he was. We thought that the end of the world was near, which is why we preformed so many sacrifices. When who we thought was our God arrived (Cortez) we believed that he was coming to postpone the end of the world. We made an effort to keep this man happy so that he would do just that. Soon, we realized that they might not be Gods and asked them to leave, and the Spanish did just that.

The return of the Spanish

When we asked the Spanish explorers to leave they did, but we didn't know what was coming next. Soon after the spaniards left, we heard something in the distance. We look to see what the sounds were and here came Spanish fighting men along with many other things were unfamiliar with. They came with dogs, horses, and many weapons. Little did we know we would be their next victims. One by one they were killing our people with weapons that we had never seen before. We had been tricked! These people were not our gods, they were frauds who pretended to be our Gods to steal from us and kill our precious people. Soon after they arrived the silent killer was upon us. This silent killer was disease and it was something not even our strongest warriors could battle. Diseases like the measles were tearing our villages apart and killing over 100,000 people. The Aztecs empire was falling apart at our fingertips.

Our Conclusions about The Spanish

The Spanish explorers had lied to us. Misleading us to believe that they were our Gods and making us worship their arrival. The spaniards killed almost all of our people and for what? They wanted our fine goods, and gold? If we would have known who they were at first they would have been conquered by us first, but unfortunately they were deceiving. As the first group of spaniards were among us, some of the smarter Aztecs were suspicious of them as they were not attending ceremonies to worship them. However, Cortez was believed to be one of our most respected Gods so we did not want to take any chances of disrespecting him. When we finally asked them to leave respectfully, we had no idea what was going through their minds. We thought they would be angry at us for asking them to leave but it was the exact opposite in their thought process. The spaniards the whole time had been thinking of ways they would be able to escape from us alive.
