Fetal alcohol syndrome is completely preventable.

To prevent FAS, pregnant women shouldn’t consume any amount of alcohol at any stage of the pregnancy. Women that are trying to conceive also should not be having any alcohol consumption.

If I had the chance to work with a child with FAS, I will remain patient, helpful, and understanding at all times. It’s important that the child feels safe and comfortable. I believe that regardless of a child’s disability or no disability, my kindness and compassion towards any child shouldn’t change and that it should remain the same amount. I will treat the child with FAS with as much respect and compassion as the other students that don’t have FAS.

It’s also important to me that I will accommodate my lessons and teaching to help the child with FAS learn. As a teacher my job is to teach and its important that I’m doing my job well so that all my students can learn, even those that has FAS since those with FAS have harder a harder time learning compared to others. I can accommodate my lessons for them by using more visual materials, being more simple and clear with my words, having 1 on 1 time, etc. Whatever makes the child with FAS thrive more, I will try my best to do.

I think that someone with FAS can bring so much strength to a classroom. Since they were born, they were a fighter and they thrived and survived. I believe they are amazing role models because even though they’ve been through so much already, they continue to be strong. They can show other peers in the classroom that strength comes from not giving up even when everything is working against you.
