For example, 5000 restaurants and hotels compost their wastes and have recyclable tumblers. Since 2009, the law obliges the inhabitants of SF to recycle and compost. Each house has got three bins: a blue one for the recyclable, a green one for the compostable and a black one for the rest. If the inhabitants don't recycle, they get a fine of $800.

It is the first recycling center at an industrial scale : food wastes and organic wastes are crushed and sorted out . It becomes compost as thin as sand . Besides , this compost is delivered directely to the wine producers of the Napa Valley and they put it at the foot of their vineyards . To finish , SF has become an exemple to follow for 200 other American cities.
