Oyster reefs provide habitats and nurseries for fish and seahorses. Reef structures provide stable points for seaweed and other marine vegetation to anchor; they also create a breakwater against strong tides and storm surges - protecting shorelines. Oysters themselves filter a large amount of seawater, regulating water quality. Empty shells add to the calcium store in the oceanbed, providing nutrients to fauna and flora.
