Stalin maintained that he would not allow free elections in Soviet satellite states, which set the US and Soviet Union apart.

The USSR was slightly more responsible than the US because they had promised the US at the Yalta conference that they would allow free elections, but this did not come through during the Potsdam Conference, but the US agreed with the other nations present at the conference how they would divide Germany. South Korea called for the United Nations, and 520,000 troops from 16 nations, largely comprised of American troops, fought alongside the South Koreans against the North. The UN army pushed back the North, almost all the way to China and Russia. However, the Communist Chinese forces decided to join with North Korea, and the two forces (Communists vs UN) eventually reached a stalemate and the Soviet Union suggested a cease-fire. Peace talks started and the two forces decided on a demilitarized zone between the North and South along the 38th parallel. The war initially started with the North invading the South, and the USSR eventually came to the aid of the North and the US to the South, which is why both the US and USSR are equally involved in the Korean War.

In addition, he denounced foreign-owned (US & British) oil fields in Iran and called for the expropriation and nationalization of all oil fields. Britain and the US concluded that Mosaddeq was Communist-leaning and were afraid that Iran would become a Soviet satellite state. Since a major goal of the US at the time was to curb the spread of Communism, they decided something had to be done. The CIA secretly arranged for another group to protest Mosaddeq's rule. Due to extensive financing by the CIA, Mosaddeq was successfully overthrown. The responsibility was mostly the US because its Central Intelligence Agency was in charge for arranging the events that led to the overthrowing of Mosaddeq. However, the USSR has to claim some responsibility, because if it was not for the widespread idea of Communism at the time, Iran would not have had the potential to move into the USSR's influence, which ultimately led to the US's involvement.

Truman decided to bomb Japan to intimidate them into ending the war. He and his staff projected that there would be a huge net saving of lives by dropping the atomic bombs as opposed to having a land invasion of Japan. Truman also used it as a statement to the Soviets, who were beginning to develop a feud with the US. The two bombs killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians. Ultimately, the Japanese Emperor ceded to the US's demands and the war ended. It was entirely the US's fault, because the US decided to drop the atomic bombs on Japan. The CIA assured President Eisenhower that the plane would self-destruct and the pilot commit suicide in the case of any incident such as being shot down, and the US Government released a cover that a US weather plane had been shot down. However, the Soviets produced recognizable U-2 wreckage and the alive pilot. An important conference scheduled between the US and USSR was called off. Ultimately, the U-2 incident of 1960 heightened Cold War tensions and drew worldwide attention to the fact that the US was indeed spying on the USSR. The US was mostly responsible for the incident because it had launched the spy plane and had bluffed about the true origins of the plane. The USSR took some responsibility because it shot down the plane and proved that it was not a US weather plane and indeed a spy plane.

During a series of U-2 flyovers of sites in Cuba, the US realized that Cuba was installing nuclear missiles, which had the potential, when launched, to reach important US sites on the East Coast in a matter of minutes, such as the Pentagon and the White House. President Kennedy's priority was to obviously remove the missile, but the means by how he would do so were unclear. A US invasion force was readied in Cuba. In the end, in exchange for removing the missile sites, the US agreed to remove missile sites in Turkey and disassemble the invasion force immediately. The missile crisis was mostly the USSR's fault, because they were the ones that had installed the missiles in Cuba. However, the US escalated the crisis by sending spy planes over Cuba and amassing an invasion force.

Working on the Domino Theory, which was if one Southeast Asian country fell to Communism, the rest of them would, JFK increased the number of troops deployed to Vietnam from 800 to over 9,000 in 1962. President Lyndon B. Johnson dispatched over 200,000 more troops in 1965 and 1966. Eventually, the US drew out because of anti-war protests. In the end, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was formed. The war broke the myth of American invincibility: Americans had helped win WWI, WWII, stalemated the Korean War, but now Vietnam would be the exception. We decided that the US was mostly responsible for the conflict because they invested heavily in the war, but the USSR helped with logistics and military support in Vietnam, but not as heavily as the US.

Then, they tried to invade the Bay of Pigs, but because they were so outnumbered, they faced an inevitable defeat. Most of the responsibility goes to the US for planning and performing the Bay of Pigs Invasion. However, the USSR was also slightly responsible because they convinced Cuba to be socialist.
