My elementary principal, Jeff, was always really friendly towards me every time I'd see him around the school, whether on the playground, in the hallways, or at lunch. Once he complimented my favorite red loafers in second grade and liked them to Dorothy's slippers. I'll never forget the one time I ever ran in the hallways and he caught me, saying only, "thanks for walking, Claire." Now every time I see a student running at WMS (and I have to say something), I tell them "thanks for walking."

Gray's Woods opened the day I started Kindergarten therefore my class was the first to attend K-5 at the school. Almost all of my memories from elementary school are very positive and I was fortunate to have amazing teachers every year who pushed and encouraged me. However my first grade teacher, Mrs.Sheehan, was my favorite. I remember vividly her bright red hair that would bob up and down as she would jump rope and do cart wheels with us at recess. For the rest of my elementary years she would send me post cards from everywhere she travelled. I believe she was the first person to expose me to traveling and thus showed me that there was more than the small town I was growing up in.

St. Dorothy's School

I attended St. Dorothy's for my entire K-8 education with about the same 30 students in my class. It was a close knit community which makes it difficult to think of just one vivid memory. One of the best years for me was 4th grade. My teacher felt like a mom to everyone; she was always enthusiastic, loud, held us to standards, and showed that she deeply cared for us. I remember her frequently asking me to go to the teacher's lounge to refill her Starbuck's mug of coffee. It was a small display of trust that really stuck with me throughout the years.

I remember that we didn't have any walls in between classrooms at my elementary school, so it was pretty easy to sneak between classrooms to say hello to friends in the next class. It was super fun at the time, but looking back from an educator's perspective, it would be an absolute nightmare!
