Megat Hamdan Syakirin Bin Shamsul Baharin<br><br>Issue/Topic : Lack of Sleep Affects Student's Performance<br><br>Background :<br>Sleep&nbsp; is an essential needs for everybody including students. If one doesn't have enough sleep for that day, he or she may gone through a rough day as he or she needs to struggle to be alert in university. A research conducted by America Academy of Paediatrics has found out that teens are biologically programmed to sleep longer than adults. Sleep deprivation can caused problems to the students, especially in their academic performance. Therefore, getting enough sleep is important for students’ health and safety and may help them to stay alert in their studies. (“Students so busy that they don’t sleep enough” - NST, Aug 14). There is a saying by&nbsp; Benjamin Franklin: “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”<br><br></div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Students who suffer from sleep deprivation tend to be hyperactive and may have short attention span in the class, as stated by a mounting body of research. In the United States, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends schools to start at 8.30 am or later (“US teens start school too early” - NST, Aug 8) so that students would have an extra hour of sleep per day to boost their academic performance.</div><div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Sleep deprived high school students who fall asleep in class aren’t just risking the rage of their lecturers. Students who faced sleep deprivation are more likely to face&nbsp; depression up to three times higher than the students who get enough sleep. “Sleep deprivation and depression go hand in hand among teenagers,” says the study’s lead author, Mahmood Siddique, D.O, a sleep medicine specialist at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The rate of depression among the students was very high. According to a study that presented in San Antonio at SLEEP 2010, thirty percent of the teens which are the students had strong depression symptoms due to lack of sleep. There so many studies or researches that held related to sleep. It show that how important sleep is in our daily life and it is essential for human being even animals.</div><div><br>Purpose :<br>To observe if lack of sleep will affect student's academic performance.<br><br>Method(s) : Interview &amp; Questionnaire, Video recording<br><br>Production Timeline : As attached.<br><br>Interviewees :<br>1. Many people use smartphones to make work easy, efficient and better. By using smartphone, a lot of things can be done. For example, we can surf any kind of information, having a communication and get the latest news from around the world. Moreover, smartphone is a necessary not only for the workers but also for high school students. It is because world now days is very advances and modern. Everything is at the fingertips. Hence, it is important for students to keep updating with the outside world in order to maintain the momentum and become a knowledgeable person. Now smartphones have come in many choices in terms of designs, colours, brands and shapes.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Smartphone is like a tiny device that has the same function as computer. This is because, smartphone has most of the applications that have in a computer. That’s why smartphone can help students to simplify many works such as download notes, online classes and online quiz. By using smartphone, people can send and receive&nbsp; phone call, message and email. People also can play videos and music with their smartphones.&nbsp; But people may not realize that smartphone give people too much comfort until they can’t survive without it.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>According to an article from <em>‘Sinar Harian’</em>&nbsp; (2013, September 21 ), it shows that people from Malaysia ranking the third higher mobile phone user in Pacific Asia. This is the prove that Malaysian are addicted to smartphones. As we can see now, kids also have their own smartphones. This is because many parents give it to them so that their children will not bothering them while they do their works. However, this situation will not even solve the problem but will make their children become more obsess to smartphone. The children tend to get easily angry and crying if cannot have the smartphones. This will turn the children to become a pasive and weak person when they grow up.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>From the observation, most of Malaysians love to spend more time using smartphone rather than having a good life style. They are far away from social community which is important for life skills.&nbsp; Students are not except as well.&nbsp; Majority students in Malaysia like to use their free time by playing games and chatting using smartphones. As example, we can see many people around us that keep using their phones all the time. By doing this, students will lack in many things such as social skill, have narrow mind and lack in&nbsp; self confident. &nbsp;<br><br></div><div>&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Negative Effects Of Smartphone To Students<br><br></div><div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div><div>1. Accident and Health Problem.</div><div>Most of the accidents that happen recently are reported caused by the neglect of the drivers who are using the smartphones while driving. Most of them love to reply messages, pick up calls and take the selfie in the car. However, this stupid action can cause serious accident and put themselves in danger. They are not just putting themselves into danger but also the other road users.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Apart from that, using smartphone too often can cause someone to have health problems. One of the problem is bad eye sight. Evidence shows that the blue light from the phone can cause damage to the back of the eye. From the experiment,&nbsp; the closer we hold the smartphones to our eyes, the more intense the light exposure, and the higher the risk of&nbsp;</div><div>possible damage. This makes smartphones the worst offenders. Besides, exposure in children could possibly lead to early onset macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness for those over 50, and to the earlier incidence of cataracts.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>After that, using smartphones too often can make someone to have hearing problem. You might have hearing problem if you use your headphone or earphone to play the music or playing games with high volume.&nbsp; If we listen to music that is too loud, we can damage the tiny hairs in the inner ear, which transmit chemical signals through nerves to the brain.&nbsp;</div><div>Students also usually use their smartphones before sleep in the dark. Smartphones also can cause the users to get a sleep problem. If you take phone to bed you may find youself plugged in while you should be winding down. Instead of relaxing your brain, you are feeding it with more thoughts. Most of students like to watch movies and playing games late at the night. This will lead them to sleep late and not having a enough sleep. </div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>2.&nbsp; &nbsp; Education&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Using the smartphones while studying can help someone to do research and revision. However, if students use smartphone to play games, watching videos and listen to music loudly, it can also become the source of distraction to the other students around them. Then, using smartphones also can cause the plagiarism among students. As example, it may be easy for students in a crowded classroom or examination hall to use their smartphones to access information online and cheat in exams. Student can browse the informations from websites or chatting through text messages.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>From that, students can easily get the answers but not in the right way. They are lying to themselves and just use the technology of smartphones to answer the exam papers. Besides, students who are too obsess to smartphones can cause the decreases grade in the study. This is because, they will spend a lot of time to just playing games and chatting through applications instead of studying.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>3. Social development</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Social development is one of the survival skills that need to be mastered by people. Everyone should know how to start a conversation with new friend. They also need to know the way to approach someone and manners to people. From that, people will live in a harmony society and loves each other. Besides, having a good relationship with community can help someone in many ways. First of all, it could help to build a solid and strong community. Second, they can help if anything happens to you.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>In addition, by having a good social development can make someone to become a great role model to someone else. They will know many people, gain a lot of experiences and devoted to society. They will be out of the comfort zone and think out of the box. This all can happen because of the information and motivation gain when be surround by the successful people. The positive vibe could turn someone from nobody to somebody as long as they have the strong social skill development.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Purpose: There are two purposes of this investigation. First of all, is to find out the reasons why UPSI students get too obsess to their smartphones. Fires can be caused by three major factors which is human accidental or accidental and self-inflicted. Usually fires will cause damage or destruction to buildings and injuries or death to human. The human factor that causes this to happen is like smoking, child negligence, welding and treachery. Accident or accidental factors caused by sudden electrical breakdown, overheating and accidental equipment. Besides that factor itself is caused by friction, weather too hot and  lightning. There are some ways that need to be taken to prevent this fire from happening. The ways are use glaze as one of the materials for building construction, provide escape routes and installing a fire sprinkler system in buildings.</div><div> </div><div>First, use glaze as one of the materials for building construction because it can performs an important role in achieving the requirements for fire protection. Glaze also can increase the fire resistance to fire penetration and the insulation is about the resistance of excessive heat. As we know, glazing is tends to used in building constructions on window part. In addition, glazing is also complies with the requirements for materials used in construction which glaze not a combustible materials. </div><div> </div><div>Second, we should provide escape routes as a way can help people leave safely and reach a place of safely and quickly. It is important thing that all building occupants know how to escape quickly and when the building fire is happening they are not restricted in the building. When unexpected incident occurs, such as building fire, this could happen with locked doors, obstacles in their path of travel, or smoke-filled escape routes. More importantly, all occupants need to diligently monitor those aspects of their building from day to day to prevent loss of life in many building fire.</div><div> </div><div>Third, installing a fire sprinkler system is the best way of controlling the spread of fire when building fire occurs. There are a few advantages of fire sprinkler system, for example fire sprinklers can stop a fire in less than one minutes and half, only the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate, spraying water directly on the fire and surrounding rooms will protect from fire, heat and smoke damage. Moreover, Fire sprinklers work so fast that they often put out a fire before the fire department arrives.  </div><div> </div><div>In the nutshell, there are some ways that need to be emphasized in order to enhance the safety of the commercial buildings such as building of Tunku Bainun Library, lecturer hall, E-learning building and the whole building of University Pendidikan Sultan Idris. Most of the building have been provided with the good safety facilities to prevent the occurrence of fire.</div><div><br>Purpose:<br>1) To investigate how to prevent the occurrence of fire.<br>2) To help more people to educate about the important to take precautions to prevent the occurrence of fire.<br><br>Method(s): <br>a) Interview<br>b) Questionnaire<br>c) Video Recording<br><br>Production Timeline : As attached<br><br>Interviewees: <br>1.
