Video #4 - How to parent a child with ADHD

This video goes into how to parent kids with ADHD. They describe ADHD as a "challenging constellation of behaviors" and also go into how it is diagnosed/found in children. They talk about the different levels of maturity vs control in a person's life going from toddler stages all the way up to late teenage years. Which ties into how ADHD or really any childhood disorder affects their maturity. For example, kids with ADHD won't be regulating their own behavior and affect as a kid without it might do. Kids with ADHD don't have as much control over themselves as others which means the parents need to maintain control. He suggests that parents try to push their child up the maturity scale to help the student teacher relationship. There are 4 steps that they want parents to follow. 1. Give them a task the kids can handle, 2. Hope the kids blow it (if the weight of the problem is on the kid, they are more likely to engage their prefrontal part of the brain to solve it), 3. Allow consequences to do the teaching - cost for their own choice. Then use empathy on them instead of just yelling at them, 4.Give the same task again - sends a message to the kid (you are smart enough to learn from your mistakes so let's try again). If kids are thinking they are less likely to get into trouble since ADHD interrupts that thought process and pulls them down the maturity scale.

This video is about learning tips for students with ADHD and some parenting tips. A very important thing is the way parents speak to their kids - avoiding yelling because the kids really can't focus when there is yelling and it is proven that they can lose IQ points when getting yelled at. Something else they talk about is creating boundaries instead of demanding things. For students, she talks about going to support groups with other kids that have ADHD which helps them a lot and this pen that syncs your notes to the audio so the kids can have an easier time taking notes. She also talks about time management for projects - stopping when the project is "fun" and not hard so it takes the stress off of them. Having the curriculum ahead of time to familiarize the kids will also help them big time.
