Simile
“All the people rose, as if they were hypnotized..." (Riordan 233). A simile is exemplified in this sentence with the "as" comparing the people rising to hypnotization. When Ares walks up to the diner, everyone rises, and the author describes to the reader that the way they rose was alike a for of hypnotization to further describe the event.
Metaphor
"I remember Mr. Brunner's expression, his thousand-year-old eyes" (Riordan 18). The sentence applies Mr. Brunner to a set of 1,000 year-old eyes, which isn't theoretically possible. The literary device allows the reader to visualize how Mr. Brunner's eyes would prehaps look like in real-life.
Imagery
“I could see Aunty Em’s dark reflection in the orange glass; her headdress was gone, revealing her face as a shimmering pale circle. Her hair was moving, writhing like serpents” (Riordan 187). The quote gives a in-depth and horryfying description of the person which Aunty Em truly is. The literary device acts as both a vivid description for the reader to visualize and as some foreshadowing so the reader can make some inferences on who Aunty Em actually is.
Irony
"Diagnosed with dyslexia, probably ADHD, too" (Riordan 88). The quote describes how all the half-bloods at Camp Half-Blood are all diagnosed with ADHD and dysleia. The quote is ironic since the half-bloods are all demigods, which you would precieve to be a superior human, but rather has many flaws. The literary device acts as almost a description, since it obviously affects their actions in the real world and shows how different demigods and humans are.
Personification
"The stone statues seemed to be looking at us like they were alive" (Riordan 173). The quote shows how the statues seemed to be life-like, even though it isn't at all possible. The literary device acts as a description of the statues for the readers to visualize the scene.

One of the two major symbols in The Lightning Thief is the lightning bolt which Zeus carries. The lightning bolt is revolved around for a majority of the story since it is what sparked the story's conflict. Since the bolt is revolved around so much, it is easy to realize how the bolt can symbolize power. People can truly understand the bolt's power by the quote "The symbol of power, from which all other lightning bolts are patterned. The first weapon made by the Cyclopes for the war against the Titans, the bolt that sheered the top of Mount Etna and hurled Kronos from his throne; the master bolt, which packs enough power to make mortal hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers" (Riordan 135). The quote shows how the lightning bolt has the power to defeat weapons such as our greatly feared hydrogen bombs and how the weapon can start a war to end civilization as we know it.

Another symbol in the story which is quite important are the dreams which the characters of Camp Half-Blood have. The dreams are messages sent from the gods in order for the characters to know their next move. An example of this dream is when Percy tells Luke that "Kronos got you to steal the master bolt and the helm. He spoke to you in your dreams" (Riordan 366). The quote shows how Kronos has been communicating with Luke and giving him ideas about taking over the world for the titans. The dreams therefore symbolize the communication between the gods or titans and the humans.

The first picture is a lightning bolt. I know it isn't Zeus's master bolt (couldn't find a picture of that), but lightning truly does radiate power alike his master bolt. For instance, the bolt in this picture is probably 5x hotter than the sun! That's nearly 50,000 degrees. If that's not powerful enough for you, after the air is heated by the electrical charge, if it hits a tree, it is likely to explode due to the rapidly vaporizing water (I got the POWAHHHH!!!!). The second picture is god from Monty Python and The Holy Grail. The dreams which the characters have in The Lightning Thief are the gods talking to them about what steps to take next. They tell the characters different forms of information for the betterment of themselves or society. Honestly, it's quite comparable to god telling King Aurthur to "stop grubbling" and "oh knock it off" or "of course it's a good idea!!!".

Top 10 events:
1. Percy vaporizing his pre-algebra teacher.
2. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover bringing back the master bolt to Zeus.
3. Aunty Em's (Medusa's) Garden Gnome Empourium where Percy, Annabeth, and Grover teaed up to kill Medusa.
4. Percy fighting Ares on the beach.
5. Percy realizing that Luke is evil in the end of the novel.
6. Percy soaking Clarisse and her friends of Ares's house in the bathroom before Percy realizes he is the son of Poseidon.
7. The Lotus Hotel and Casino
8. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover's trip to the Underworld.
9. Percy's mom "accidentally" turning her abusive husband Gabe to stone with the slain head of Medusa.
10. Percy coming back the first hero to Camp Half-Blood.

To start off, accidentally vaporizing a pre-algebra teacher sounds like a pretty cool thing any day. I have actually done it myself before. Twice to be exact. Moving on, we have Annabeth, Grover and Percy bringing back the master bolt. I don't know about the person(s) reading this, but I do quite enjoy when my book ends with a happy resolution where our main character is victorious, not all-out war. For #3 I have Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium because nothing is more satisfying than the protagonist cutting off the dead of someone who literally turns small children to stone. Next is Percy fighting Ares on the beach. The fact that Percy had the courage to fight against a god, let alone win, is definitely worth some respect. Then we have Percy finding out Luke is evil. This was definitely a big plot twist (even though I called it :D) and really gave the story a whole new level of greatness. The Lotus Hotel and Casino is obviously something the author put in randomly when he realized he accidentally made it to his destination before the deadline of the summer solstice. I just thought it was a funny direction to go given it is a highly appraised book. Next is #8 which is the trip to the Underworld. It was entertaining especially for those audience members who are into Greek Mythology since they really didn't know anything there and were nearly accidentally eaten by Cerberus. How are you nearly accidentally eaten by a giant dog? Then there's Percy's mom getting revenge on Gabe. I have been waiting for this moment for 356 pages. It was definitely worth reading that Gabe had been turned into a statue which Percy's mom was able to sell in order to go to college. Lastly, there is Percy coming back the hero to Camp Half-Blood. Everyone hat their doubts about Percy. Many didn't want him to secede and many were sure he would die. It was really nice to see our main character, who was quite noticeably a failure from the beginning, come out a hero in the end.

For this element, my picture is of Mrs. Dodds. Mrs. Dodds is the pre-algebra teacher which Percy vaporizes in the first chapter. Out of every single moment on the list, this has to be my favorite. I figured that this best-represented the list due to my positive attitude towards, her vaporization, though I do like what happened to Gabe as well. I'm quite obviously out of the ordinary with a Monty Python and the Holy Grail meme in an English project, so naturally I like this the best.
