These plants came to India through colonization of Mexico and South America. They are similar in color and shape to a native holy plant, calendula. But maybe because marigolds smell stronger and have bigger flowers, they replaced calendula in many Hindu ceremonies and cultural uses.

These flowers are native to Mexico and South America and are sacred plants used in many religions/spiritual ceremonies and cultural events such as Los Dias De Los Muertos. They are also used medicinally and agriculturally.
