“His speaking voice, a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed. There was a touch of paternal contempt in it, even toward people he liked — and there were men at New Haven who had hated his guts”.

In these sentences they describe Tom in different ways and words....

Having arrogant eyes:  means that we look down upon others in a condescending way. We think more highly of ourselves than we should.

Gruff husky tenor: Being troublesome

fractiousness: irritability

paternal contempt: lack of respect accompanied by a feeling of intense dislike

The impression I got off Nick describing Tom in the novel that he is a ignorant man who only cares about himself. He seems to also be a bully to others because it says in the text that nobody likes him. They describe him also as irritated man that has a problem with everyone. Only cares about himself and thinks highly of himself being better than anyone.

Families who live in East Egg are born rich. This place also has people who had money in their family for a long time which were called old money. Daily and Tom live in this town. 

In the West Egg is more different than East Egg. West Egg people had to work for their money in order to make a living. It’s more corrupted and the people who live there have new money. Nick and Gatsby live in West Egg. Although Nick lives in a wealthy area he lives in a small house. 

“Nick calls his own house an “eyesore” and believes his own house is “miniature” compared to his neighbors”(Chapter 2).

In the Valley of Ashes is a farm next to train tracks and foggy gray air. George and Myrtle live here and Tom visits his mistress here as well. 

New York City is a more populated place with lots of city lights and events happening. Myrtles sister lives here, Mrs Wilson,  and so does Tom live here. 


Tom seems to be in almost all of the settings. It makes sense because he’s a more complicated character and is in every issue. He lives in New York where his wife and misters’s sister lives which is so disrespectful. “Wilson? He thinks she goes to see her sister in New york. He’s so dumb he doesn’t know he is alive” (Chapter 2). Nick and Gatsby are a part of a lot of things that happen but they seem to always be in the side. Her social class is what makes her ego strong. She doesn’t have any feel for anyone else in the world around her. It’s as if she’s the main character and everyone else around her are side characters of her world. Social class is classified by where you live. She’s not new rich or neither old rich. She’s just continuing rich and she grew up in the environment as Daisy which made her feel high class. It’s been shown that some characters can pass in more than one social class. Jordan shows that.

New information we got about Gatsby from his business partner, Meyer Wolfshiem is that their both involved in illegal activities. “ He and this Wolfsheim sold grain alcohol...I picked him. For bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn't far wrong”. We also find out that Gatsby accumulates his wealth through illegal means. Gatsby hides this self of himself obviously to not look bad to others. Gatsby connects to the criminal world but he covers that all this money is from inheritance. He always seemed mysterious to me and that’s how he was shown until we found out about this.

Chapter 4 Gatsby carries these things with him to prove he’s something. He claims to have been educated at Oxford and shows prove to have collected jewels in the capitals of Europe and shows his medal from Montenegro and a picture of himself playing cricket at Oxford. It’s so random and a bit odd to carry a picture of yourself playing cricket. Gatsby’s was speeding through the valley of ashes and when he enters the city a policeman pulls Gatsby over for speeding, Gatsby shows him a white card, and the policeman lets him go. “ ‘ right you are,’ agreed police man...’ know you next time, Mr. Gatsby. Excuse me,’ “(chapter 4 page 68). The police didn’t even have to say anything else he apologized after looking at the oxford picture. The green light symbol represents Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. It was so dark at the beginning of the book and the green light is what encouraged him and guidance for the future. Gatsby had told Daisy about his long nights spent outside staring at the green light at the end of her dock hoping the future will be filled of nothing but happiness. Money symbolizes the wealth Gatsby believes what could win Daisy from Tom. I believe the color green has to do with going for what you want. It’s better to try than to never get to the green light. In cultures the color can be a symbol of luck and wealth. “Gatsby beloved in the green light, the future that year by your recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter, tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther”. (Chapter 9).

The weather seems to match the story. It’s a nervous day for Gatsby on the meeting day with Daisy. That day was pouring with so much rain. He was so overwhelmed and wanted everything to be perfect which affected his excitement to see her. While it was still raining Daisy felt awkward at first. Nick thinking the meeting wasn’t going to go well but when he returned he found them both so happy and suddenly the weather had changed. Gatsby describes his family very wealthy and born rich. His family was never rich they lived poor and were unsuccessful farmers. He lied to Nick about his family just to make himself look wealthy. As a young man he dreamed to have more and so that made him become desperate to be something he isn’t. His motivation now is brag about what he has and where he came from. In my opinion I believe Gatsby has always been in love with Daisy. He changed himself and lied about where he came from and about other things just to get closer to her. He changed himself for someone to like him back which can be very draining. “ Her voice is full of money”. Says Gatsby about Daisy and he so obsessed with being just like her. In my opinion I believe Daisy does not love Gatsby. She’s not committed to him like how Gatsby is to her. She’s only in the idea of love because she’s never had that intention from someone. I believe she is still in love with Tom even though they’ve been through a lot she will always go back to him because he was the first person. Tom is in love with Daisy but it has never been a good relationship. He treats her bad because he doesn’t know how to be a real man but I still think he loves her just because he’s kept her around for so long. She has always stayed and been there. I can relate to Daisy mentally and emotionally but the circumstances are different. She’s in between two guys and some people believe that’s not as bad as wanting the girl that is also in love with another guy. It’s so hard for the girl when she’s in the position to choose which person she wants to be with. Daisy was my least favorite character in this novel but she became the character I relate to the most. I understand her for choosing to be with Gatsby and wanting a relationship with him because he’s offering her what she wants. I was in the same situation where I was with this boy who didn’t put too much effort into our relationship and out of nowhere this boy that I’ve known for a long time confesses his feelings towards me and he offered me so much. It felt so easy to move onto the new guy but eventually i started to miss my ex. Even though he didn’t give me what the new guy offered I felt more attached to him. The first thing you notice about a book is the cover. This was the first book that ever made me think hard about. It seemed so strange but I felt like it had a huge meaning to it. My first thought was it being someone who is physically beautiful but yet so dark and ugly on the inside. I came to realize that the eyes on the cover are nude women representing Gatsby views about the future with Daisy. The eyes and lips are Daisy and the green tears is the green light. The tears on the cover represent tears of hope of the future. The background color is also a solid blue and I believe that shows sadness within the whole book. This was the most shocking chapter . I was not expecting Gatsby to get shot especially by Wilson but It was adding up and it felt like it was leading to something bad. From Wilson driving to Gatsby's house to pulling out a trigger. I was able to understand why he did what he did. Although what he did was not the best answer it made no difference and it didn’t help anything.

I believe the point Fitzgerald was trying to make about the American Dream through the story and the characters is that a person will always reach towards something greater than themselves that is just out of reach. The American Dream can be corrupt due to characters in the novel that had sudden wealth that became materialistic with having no morals. This made the characters not focus on the idealistic problems. Gatsby’s American Dream was to be a wealthy man for Daisy and give her the best lifestyle anyone can dream for. This affected him a lot to accomplish being a wealthy man and her not being able to choose him. Gatsby achieved the American dream by being a low class worker to becoming a wealthy businessman..

After reading this novel I’ve learned a lot to not trust anyone so easily with your heart and time. It was so easy for Gatsby to give everything to Daisy without knowing the pain he was setting himself up for, “.Well, there I was, ‘way off my ambitions, getting deeper in love every minute, and all of a sudden I didn’t care” (page 150). He was so dangerously in love with her that he loved her more than he loved himself. Relationships don’t work when you love the other person more instead of loving yourself. He depended on her for happiness. That's where it all went wrong. She was not fully committed to him and she didn’t have her priorities right as a girlfriend. After all, Gatsby wasted so much of his time on her and in return he didn’t get anything but disappointment. His whole life he did everything for Daisy even when she wasn’t there physically. The huge house, the parties, clothes, everything was for her and at the end of the day he died and never won her heart. She wasn’t even part of his funeral and that shows what kind of person she is. After he died she went back to Tom to live happily ever after. This song has deep meaningful lyrics of being attached to someone who isn’t there. In the song she sings “ Loving you forever can’t be wrong, even though you’re not here, won’t move on”, “ I’m scared that you won’t be waiting on the other side, every time I close my eyes, it’s like a dark paradise, no one compares to you” Gatsby can relate to these lyrics the most because the person he truly loves can’t give him what he wants. At the end of the novel he’s waiting for her to call him and that’s where I think the lyrics “ I’m scared that you won’t be waiting on the other side” fits perfectly into the story. He convinces himself that she will call him only because it also seems unlikely that she will. He waited for her call the entire day and never got to live to hear her voice again. His dreams for the future is to love her forever and he doesn’t see anything wrong with it. It’s hard to believe that love can be so dangerous. People actually go through these things where love becomes more like a drug than happiness.In the book when Tom only thinks it’s fine for him to cheat on Daisy but it’s the end of the world when Daisy does the same. I’ve seen this happen to my friends and on social media with celebrities. Cheating becomes a circle in some couples who don’t know how to love properly. Gatsby also dies for only trying to love Daisy. I’ve seen couples constantly cheat on each other to get revenge. I believe during the time of the book men were still a little more respectful to women.
