He told them about his uncle named Elias. And how one day Elias received a letter with five orange pips. He freaked out and destroyed the envelope because he learned it had come from the KKK. He created a will out of panic and left his estate to Johns father Joseph. A couple days later Elias was found dead in a shallow garden pool. A couple years pass and Joseph gets a letter with five orange pips as well. Before Joseph saw the letter he found a box full of KKK letters and destroyed them. And then when he got the letter he couldn't piece things together because it was already destroyed. He was then found dead a couple days later. John then inherited the estate and received the same letter. He showed Sherlock and he explained what the KKK was. In Elias diary it has said that he set the pips on three people. The pips where symbolic for a death threat. The next morning the paper announced Johns death by drowning. Sherlock was shocked and researched the ship that john was on. When doing so he found out that the captain was named Calhoun and works with two american KKK shipmates. Sherlock sent a letter with five orange pips and on the envelope the initials of the dead to scare them off but the ship got in an accident.
