Social Construction of Gender by

In chapter 2, you learn about how gender is (at least in part) socially constructed. In the “Social Construction of Gender” section of your Padlet, demonstrate, using mixed-media examples, how gender is a socially-constructed concept. Gather and add examples (artifacts) to your Padlet that reflect, reinforce, or challenge socially-constructed gender norms, and label them respectively. After you have spent some time curating this section of your Padlet, write 2-3 paragraphs (no more than one-page double spaced), explaining how the artifacts you have curated in your Padlet explain, demonstrate, or even challenge the notion of the Social Construction of Gender. Submit your explanation on the Discussion Board in Blackboard.

Social Construction of Gender Today

While reading this article, to my amazement it captures and breaks down how society in today's world is quite remarkable at shaping and creating it's own idealistic views on what a man is like and what a women is like. Or at least should be like. https://othersociologist.com/sociology-of-gender/

However it wasn't until I fell upon an advertisement that was created by CoverGirl showing off their new makeup line. An the model was no female. http://www.refinery29.com/2016/10/126003/covergirl-first-male-model-james-charles#slide

Now this I found to be quite astonishing! We have now reached an era where males are openly redefining and setting makeup trends. Of course with that being said I couldn't help but to wonder how our society is taking this. Threshold Concepts are formed when we were a child. Children's thoughts are forcefully engraved that girls play with dolls and boys play with trucks, but now what if a boy wishes to play with makeup? Is this wrong? With media like this it makes me think should we judge, if so why? Are we basing it off of what we know biologically or what we've formed throughout our history from media, gossip, religion and etc. The argument is that Charles(Covergirl model) Is not a boy and therefore should not wear nor model it. I think I can speak for others when I say his makeup is flawless and I wish I could do my makeup like him, and I am a women! As time begins to change so does our media when realizing that no too long ago society shunned women for wearing pants, now we shun men for wearing skirts. The cycle will forever continue into something else, because now it's men wearing makeup. Our culture can be so wrapped up in preserving what we see as the way of life. To be quite honest this is not how we were meant to live life. Be ourselves in secret but when in public live life to societies standards.

I guess this is why "We Should All Be Feminists" to seek equality for those that have a voice but need help so that people will actually listen. It is not our call to say who should and should not wear makeup because this is putting people down. We should stick up for men and women of all ages when it comes to this subject matter.
