What are some examples in Canada that contradict Rawl's Theory of Justice?

Even though Canada strives for universal healthcare, the degradation of Rawls' Theory of Justice becomes when analyzing the system further. This is due to the fact that within the system, many people are still discriminated against based on their identity i.e.; socio-economic status, race, and gender.

A further example is the limited access to justice that plagues the Canadian justice system. It specifically discriminates low income families and can result in their unequal treatment under the law, due to their inability to afford a proper legal defence.

To what extent does Canada reflect Rawl's Theory of Justice?

1st principle: The Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the individual's rights, which guarantees rights such as expression, religion, and association. This shows Canada's significant progress in achieving the first principle.

2nd principle: Social and economic inequalities are still persistent in groups such as people living in poverty, Indigenous peoples, and other radicalized communities. The distribution of wealth and income still have great inequalities despite the robust social welfare programs because of the widening gap between the wealthy and the poor.

Therefore, despite the progress and advancement towards the final goal, there is still plenty of space for development and improvement.

Is Rawl's Theory of Justice an effective way to think about how to create a society?

This theory is useful when thinking about bringing justice and fairness to society. It would result in the rearrangement of inequalities and it would further ensure that tall people are treated with respect. However, there are also many other approaches and frameworks to thinking about this topic that are able to address other concerns. That being said, Rawl's Theory of Justice is effective to the extent of its applicability to problems in systems and the complexity of real world situations.
