He is very literal so if you asked him "What's in your pockets?"(Picoult 211) he would reply "My hands."(Picoult 211) Along with Jacob being literal he also has a hard time with facial expressions and body language to understand what someone is feeling. Jacob said "So I got sent to the principle's office for my bad attitude when, really, it was because the expressions on people's faces are not always reflections of how they feel"(Picoult 130). On top of that he sometimes can't find the words to describe his own feelings so he uses someone else's. "Hasta la vista baby,"(Picoult 131). Jacob's routine is very crucial and particular. Change is not appreciated very well because of Jacob's autism. He is obsessed with order and his room reflects that. Everything is in its place and his clothes are put away and organized in ROYGBIV which are the colors of the rainbow. He is a unusual type of kid that gets good grades but gets into trouble a lot. By bad I mean he breaks into peoples houses and steal things and screws with their recordings on the DVR. He'll even make a sandwich from the refrigerator of the house he broke into. Although he is younger he acts like the older brother to Jacob partly because he does not have autism and has more friends and common sense. As in friends I don't mean the whole school but about 3-5 more friends than Jacob who has no friends. He thinks of Jacob as mutual. He hates him sometimes but sticks up for him as well mostly because he is a sibling of Jacob. It starts out with one character talking and then at a suspenseful point changes to a new chapter in the mind of a different character. This way it keeps you wanting to find out what happens to the character that was in the previous chapter which I think is very annoying. Sometimes it will change perspectives on the same event with a new character but other times it changes to a completely new scenario. In terms of why you should care about this book is the lesson of sticking together because tomorrow is another day. There might be times that you are down or hate life but the grass is always greener on the other side. There will be hard times and you just have to push through it.
