Young girls and women will compare themselves to the body images displayed by the fashion industry which will then be the cause of eating disorders, taking the life of many our society.

The fashion industry plays a huge role on what the population sees as a healthy body image . But ultimately, it’s up to that individual to decide how it’s going to affect them. Passage one states that showing excessive amount of plus size models leads consumers to believe it is ok to be obese and unhealthy. We should use all types of body types in advertising because just like there is fat shaming, there is also skinny shaming and all parties of bodies need representation. Passage two recognizes the disorders invading the fashion industry and suggest it is the guardian’s responsibility to set a healthy body image for the model . But , unless you are with somebody 24/7 you can’t prevent everything .

With the introduction of social media, activism has become shallow and only wishful thinking. The impact is often not enough to incite noticeable social change. For example, hash tags on twitter like the #metoo, only shares the experience without addressing the actual issue. However, one must acknowledge the global reach social media can wield. It can create awareness but only awareness

The fashion industry suggests that women should be and mantain a certain body type. It's rarely a medium, always a too large, or too small. Either way, they're both unhealthy, but the blame shouldn't all be on the model, there's others involved. Parents are second overall reason why the unhealthy body types in the fashion industry are prevalent. Parents allow their child to be unhealthy & continue to be unhappy to fit a companies "perfect body type". Being a consumer of certain fashions also feeds into companies continuing to put out the things we look at, like certain body types that fit certain clothes, underwear, etc.

Social media is not an efficient way of making change to our society. During the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. maintained a strategic and controlled revolution. Social media is the opposite in most cases. It is not filtered or monitored. In current news, Sarah Chadwick posted a response to Mark Dice, a youtube personality. In Sarah’s tweet, she said very vulgar words that were not appropriate for the situation. Because of the immature reaction of Sarah Chadwick, he cause has lost meaning. But in the case of Dr. King’s movement, he kept it controlled and disciplined enough to make a real change.

In clothing businesses, the owners’ will want model that look attractive when wearing the company’s products, but also make sure that the customers can easily project themselves in the clothes.
To satisfy their customers, businesses expect the models they hire from fashion industries to look a certain way, leading fashion industries to be strict on their models’ diets, and any factor that may contribute in their physical appearance.

There is no question that the portrayal of body types in the fashion industry influence what the consumers buy and feel. However, the responsibility on the body images that the fashion industry portrays have far more complex factors than you may think. We, as buyers, play a role in what body types we choose to look up to. The fashion industry may be responsible for what we want, but not what we feel. If I'm online shopping and the models have similar body types to mine, I will feel more comfortable with purchasing the clothing.

From an endless correction of their, there, and they're to unwanted opinions and incorrect, information, social Media is on of the least effective ways of starting a social movement. A modern example would be the "#stayalivechallenge" although it is some thing that needs attention brought to, this was very ineffective because it was people posting black and white pictures for the next few days which didnt include donations or specific awareness for those people. A more effective example was the ice bucket ALS challenge in which money was donated but it came with its flaws of people doing it for fun...

The fashion industry is very much a cause of the issues that comsumers face today with body image. Not only are they promoting unrealistic body expectations but they are encouraging smaller and larger clothing sizes. Stores such as Rue21, Hollister, Old Navy, and Torrid encourage clothes that are acceptable for petite or plus size females. This can leave the teenage girls that go to these stores feeling like its okay that they are overweight or underweight because thats how the fashion industry shows it. It can also make girls who arent quite as big or small to feel like thats how they have to be. This can lead to health problems such as anorexia, bulimia, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and diabetes.
