Nato a Genova nel 1451 morto a Valladolid nel 1506, navigatore italiano, chiamato in spagnolo Cristóbal Colón. Deve la sua fama alla scoperta del continente americano. Il padre era tessitore, e si pensa che la prima attività diColombo, in giovane età, sia stata proprio il commercio di tessuti. I suoi viaggi in qualità di mercante segnarono molto probabilmente l'inizio della sua carriera di navigatore. Intorno al 1470 compì il suo primo viaggio all'isola di Chio, nel mare Egeo, e nel 1476 si imbarcò su un convoglio di navi diretto in Inghilterra.
