What does international-mindedness mean to you?

International Mindedness to me means tackling hard hitting problems without solely thinking about ourselves. Major contemporary issues in the world such as human rights issues and environmentalism are issues that each country and members of each country may face. Nonetheless, when we face these problems, international-mindedness implies that we come up with a solution that will not only be respectful to ourselves, but those around us in our own country and the countries that surround us.

What does it mean to be a “global citizen”?

To be a global citizen means that we forget the notion of individualism and class. That we are no longer separated by race or class, but rather we all belong to the human race. Hence, whatever issues one of us face means it is an issue all of us face, since we all belong to the same membership that is the human race. This is similar to international mindedness in that global citizens tackle their problems with the rights and benefits of everyone in mind.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Schools today can use Biology and other group 4 subjects to prepare students for global citizenship. If done the correct way, our courses will be framed in a manner that strives away from the individual and more so towards the collective. For example, in Ontario, grade 12 university Biology has a segment on Biochemistry and carbohydrates, lipids and fats, and their importance to our bodies. Instead of framing a lesson like this around only OUR bodies in our community, we should also take a look at how other individuals' bodies are affected by these macronutrients, especially those in war torn or poverty stricken regions. Talking about how these bodies may be drastically impacted should be used as a spark to get students talking and thinking about how the homeostasis of those around us are being affected and how we can help!

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

My classroom has benefited in a variety of ways from communities, cultures and nationalities. One very important way is through the contributions of Indigenous learning and thought processes within the grade 10 science environmental and climate change unit. My school is a Catholic school, in which students are taught to carry out the lord’s work and to have a deep respect for God. In Indigenous communities, rather than God being seen as the provider and respecting them, the earth is seen as the provider and hence they have a profound respect and care for the earth. Fostering this Indigenous teaching and mindset of the earth being our provider in our students has been so important in getting students to care more deeply about our planet!

How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

Although I am not teaching an IB course at the moment, I am currently teaching grade 12 Biology and this is the most similar to IB Biology. I think when teaching Homeostasis, we can make students aware of how the environment impacts homeostasis on the body and how drastic changes in our climate can leave our bodies out of homeostasis. This can lead to a conversation about what organizations are doing their best to protect the environment such as the World Wide Fund for Nature and how this is beneficial not only to us in our region but to those in over 100 countries around the world.

When completing their final culminating task for grade 12 biology, my students are required to teach a concept and find a career that is related to the concept that they teach from the course. Their job is to explain the career and what day to day duties these individuals complete. However, they are also asked how does their selected career fit into the global context and why is this profession needed on a global level. Students must elaborate on what this profession does for human health on a global scale and what are some cross country opportunities that individuals in this career can get involved with to help the global/collective good.
