People sailed on boats to gain knowledge on the lands beyond their known maps so they could map out the unknown territory. When these people reach the land they decided to explore what was around them and see what new materials they could obtain. It is true that some explorers would invade native territories, but they are still charting and exploring what is there. And it is also true that they did try to convert the people into Christianity, for example this is what the Spanish conquistadors did to the Aztecs and other natives.

Hernan Cortes did explore the new world in search for god, glory, and gold. He found the Aztecs who looked up to him as if he were a god so he took advantage of this so he could learn about them.
