The depictions were really strange and most likely unrealistic. The depictions changed a lot throughout history.

Why do you think writers from the Romantic period shifted away from the Puritan style of morally good characters and began writing about characters who made bad choices? I think it began to shift away from styles to new styles, things change throughout time. It was easier to make stories that had a person with bad choices. its like John Wayne vs Clint Eastwood versions of Western Movies.
