What I really love about the library is connecting learners (staff and students) to information through various resources, whether it is print books, ebooks, technology, video, or online resources. I love the conversations I have with readers about books that they read, that they love, and ones they want to see in the library. I love using Skype and GHO to connect our school to authors, experts, and other students. My favorite days in the library are Dot Day , Global Read Aloud https://theglobalreadaloud.com/ , World Read Aloud Day http://www.litworld.org/wrad , March Book Madness http://marchbookmadness.weebly.com/ , and Scholastic Book Fairs http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/ ! I also love encouraging students to try new things through maker space activities like coding, crafting, robotics, and origami (to name a few) allowing them a place to safely fail and try again. I think of the library as the biggest classroom for all students and all courses to learn and grow together.

Book Tasting is an idea adapted from a lesson shared by the wonderful @buffyjhamilton. It involves selecting 10 to 15 books from a genre with about 5 to 6 genres highlighted. Students choose a book from 3 different genres to spend a few minutes reading each in turn(you choose how long). I have students reflect on a sheet on each book & give it a star rating. They then move on to the next book. This activity can also be done with more specific questions about each read. It is a non-threatening way to try new books & new genres. So many students have gone of to borrow one of their book tasters. Another great activity which can take up to 2 lessons is to get students to design book posters on Canva. Students write a brief review & recommendation & the result is a colourful poster for your library! I

I'm so grateful to the countless school librarians and children's literature professionals who generously share the resources they spend hours maintaining that help level the playing field for librarians with less time and fewer resources to devote to collection development.

I love the momentum the WE NEED DIVERSE BOOKS movement has been steadily gaining. All children and young adults deserve and need to see themselves and our beautifully diverse local and global community reflected in their reading materials. Black and brown characters, LGBT characters, differently abled characters, characters with non-traditional family structures, families receiving financial or nutritional assistance.... I want to see even MORE books featuring all these types of characters, and I want them to be mainstream, "everybody" books, not special interest, or seen as only for the populations represented. We as a community have made huge gains- but there is more work to do, so let's do it!

I love that my library is teacher-student centered so that the focus is on comfort, interaction, and welcoming. My students can sit in chairs and beanbags that fit them, teachers can walk in get what they need, and know it's okay to touch and use without asking. I train teachers to check out their own books, to get chocolate from my candy dish, make a mug cake, fix a cup of coffee and they don't need to ask. X Teacher kids show up at the end of the day bringing a game of Monopoly or play at makerspace no one needs to ask as we are always open. It's the happy place for everyone.

It may be fiction or non-fiction. Any classroom from Kindergarten through 4th grade may enter. Just one story per classroom! It can be a collaborative story, or you can have your class vote on which child's story to enter. And there's no database to enter or permission slips to sign. You, the teacher, just need to email me the story. It is your classroom entering to win. Please be sure to read my "Official Rules" page for all entry details! Our students need to see themselves as readers, to connect with themselves and with others through literature. They need to know that they are not alone. And then we work to share reading experiences with those outside our school as well.

Last year we decided to shake up the traditional paper pathfinders that existed in our school library for decades and modernize the idea with a Pinterest page; our page includes boards organized by genres and curriculum ties. It's amazing when students visit our Pinterest page and all of the beautiful cover art; we love seeing and hearing their reactions. Once they find a book of interest, they are one click away from a brief summary of the book. The Pinterest page has helped encourage reluctant readers to read, and I LOVE nothing more than getting books in kids' hands and supporting their love for reading! (Check out our always-growing Pinterest page here: https://www.pinterest.com/ShepardLC/

Since I arrived 1 1/2 years ago it has been my goal to create an inviting space for students, staff, and the community. The collaboration process involved in making decisions has been gratifying. I love that we are full every day; that we receive positive feedback about the layout, furniture & color choices, and that patrons are enjoying the updates. Getting them in is the first step towards sharing resources, getting them reading, and comfortable enough to tinker.

STEAM + C: Adding Compassion to the Makerspace

Gina Seymour @ginaseymour
Librarian at Islip High School (9-12)

I love building an empathetic mindset and compassion among our students through our successful MakerCare program. Our MakerCare program facilitates community service projects for our teens as described in this School Library Journal article. The program features a series of compassionate maker projects with the focus on empathy and social action. Overall, the idea is to make a difference in life of another through the act of making. As educators, we have the ability to expose unfairness in the world, while at the same time inspiring our youth to repair the world through service. I love facilitating the development of civically engaged compassionate citizenry.

I learned about Clips from Apple just this year and have loved using it with kids. There is a little learning curve but I love that kids can talk and words show up on the screen and there are filters and stickers and emojis. It's not perfect but it's a start... With the book the Bad Seed, I had students record their partner and tell why they are a "good seed" with text!

There are so many things I love about working in the library...more than anything I want kids to make a positive connection to the library so they will continue going wherever they are in life.

Shannon, thank you so much for sharing this Padlet. I love so many ideas that you all have shared. We are truly great when we work together! Thank you for your inspiration!
