Theme of the book

I personally believe that the theme of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is "to expect anything around any corner." In short, it's to expect everything to be absurd. Hardly anything will ever go exactly to the plan you have in your head, so simply don't expect it to! This can be proven by simply looking at different events that occur in the text. As the point of the book is absurd Sci-Fi moments, it makes sense for this to be the theme.

Arthur and Ford have just been ejected into the big black vacuum of space. "...it does go on to say that what with space being the mind-boggling size it is, the chances of getting picked up by another ship within [the] 30 seconds are two to the power of two hundred and seventy-six thousand, seven hundred and nine to one against." (page 77). However, "...twenty-nine seconds later, Ford and Arthur were rescued."

I think this is a perfect example of absurdity, considering, according to those odds, it's practically impossible to be rescued, and especially 1 second before sure death.

Towards the end of the book, the story of "The answer to The Life, The Universe, and Everything." is told to the reader. Essentially, a powerful computer, named Deep Thought, is created to answer that exact question. It takes Deep Thought 7 and a half million years to calculate the answer, and finally, he finishes.

"All right,' said Deep Thought. 'The Answer to the Great Question... of Life, the Universe, and Everything... is... is... Forty-Two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm." (Page 181)

I'm not sure anybody without a prior knowledge of the book would have expected such a mundane and simple answer. This is why I believe this is a perfect example of absurdity within the book.
