        In my complete educational career (elementary through college), I have had about 8 years worth of Spanish instruction. I know enough to be able to understand what Spanish-speaking people are trying to tell me with them speaking slower than their normal speed.

2. If any, where did you learn Spanish?

        I had about 4 years (first through fourth grade) worth in elementary school although this was rather informal and only occurred about once a week. I then had two formal years in high school (junior and senior year) and then two formal years in college at Northwest-Shoals Community College.

3. Have you been required to learn Spanish in your college career?

        I have never been "required" to learn in but I chose to take two years worth as electives. Name of Head Covering: Hijab      
Research/ Significance:  The Hijab is worn by Muslim girls and women to maintain modesty and privacy from unrelated males. According to National Geographic, the Hijab is not strictly defined in the Muslim holy book, the Quran. It is more of a personal and cultural concept and not a religious one.
Interesting Facts:
1. The Hijab means "curtain or partition" and not "headscarf".
2. There are many different forms of Hijab.
3. Hijab also applies to men.
4. The Hijab can only be taken off in front of family members or places where there are only women present.
5. In countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, Muslim women are compelled by law to wear Hijab. On the other side, there are also some countries who have banned any type of Hijab being worn in public or in certain types of places.
6. Women who wear Hijab have started finding their strength in wearing Hijab.
7. Hijab's are not worn all the time. They are taken off at home or only in places where they are sure it is only women there.
8. It is not only Muslim women that cover their hair but also some branches of Judaism and Christianity.
9. The veil was originally a representation of upperclass status.

Name of Head Covering: Headdress
Research/ Significance:
        The Native American Headdress is a very, well-known symbol of strength and bravery to the indigenous people of North America. Headdresses are important because they have been worn by the most powerful and the most influential people in the tribe. It is not only a great honor to wear one of these, but it is also a huge honor to be able to be a close friend, brave warrior, or a chief who is making the headdress. The headdress is not made in one day. It actually takes quite a bit of time. The process itself displays how meaningful and importance it is for the person who has earned it.
Interesting Facts:
1. Only those who were known as being admired and greatly respected from other members of the tribe would wear a headdress.
2. Currently, you would most likely see these worn during a wedding ceremony, a pow wow, or other ceremonies.
3. Both men and women can wear a headdress, the only different would be the band (men wear more bonnet style, while women wear a beaded headband style).
4. If you haven't earned the headdress, don't wear one. It is seen as disrespectful towards those who have earned them.
5. Most Native people get upset or offended when headdresses are used as a costume or mascot.

Name of Head Covering: Kapp (Prayer Cover)
Research/ Significance:
        The Kapp is important in the Amish culture because in the women's case, it represents their respect for their beliefs and the church.  For men it can symbolize their civil status, position in the community, and respect for special events or prayers. The Amish and Mennonites originate from the Anabaptist movement in Europe that began in the 16th century. Wearing a head covering probably came along with their culture.
Interesting Facts:
1. Old order Amish women and girls wear modest dresses from solid-covered fabric with long sleeves and a full skirt.
2. Amish women never cut their hair. They typically wear it in a bun on the back of their head.
3. There are different meanings behind different colored bonnets. White means married and black means single.
4. Amish women do not wear jewelry.
5. The Amish people don't use electricity because "they interpret linking with electrical wires as a connection with the world and the Bible tells them they are not to be conformed to the world."

As you can tell, this is not an in depth page and it only scratches the surface. I encourage you to look more in depth into each culture that is mentioned here. No two cultures are just alike. Although they may be similar, they all vary slightly to some degree. 
    Each section on this padlet pretty much explains itself. In the language section, I chose to do Spanish because that is a language that is spoken a lot in the United States and it is very helpful to know some of the basic words. 
    In the dress section, I chose to do the three that are most commonly thought of and that can be found here in the United States. We are all likely to encounter someone who wears a Hijab, a Native American and and someone from the Amish community at some point. 
     In the movie section, I chose the two that looked the most interesting to me. Fair warning, if you choose to watch "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas", be prepared to cry.
    In the travel section, I chose to do a place that I have always wanted to travel to. Our church missionaries are from the Ivory Coast and I have always wanted to travel over there to see what it is like.

I have been through a lot of Spanish and the words that they were giving me were beginners words. I really liked Babbel, and I think it is a great resource to use. I think if I knew that a foreign exchange student is coming to my classroom, I would have the students learn a little of their language before they get there that way they don't feel so alone. 
    The dress section was a little more difficult to do. This was mostly due to the fact that a lot of resources just restate the same information with the exception of research on the Hijab. The most difficult one to do was the Amish one because there are so many different types of Amish communities out there. No two communities are the same.
    I really, really enjoyed the movies portion. I love to watch movies. Hidden Figures was really good. It was a great feel good movie and I loved how the main characters were all three women and how they defied all odds. On the other hand, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was a tear jerker. I have seen parts of this one before because we watched most of it in high school but I had completely forgotten about the ending.
I really enjoyed doing research on a place that I would like to travel to in the future. Over the years, I have gotten the privilege and the honor of getting to know them and calling them my friends. In speaking with them, I have learned that the women typically take care of the agriculture while the men take up most of the business and economic roles.
