i by hAdd your ideas to this thread about possible themes of The Kite Runner as an idea for a possible analysis essay. Be sure to sign your name to your post.

Bella - I think a good theme would be growth as a person, from guilt and selfishness to redemption and the willingness to risk everything for a person.

Jared- Abuse of power is a prominent theme within the several character interactions throughout the novel. For example, Amir's reading ability: Amir abuses the intellectual power he has over Hassan.

Katrina - Guilt is a theme throughout the book. Amir feels guilty about the way he treats Hassan. Hassan always treated Amir with respect and loyalty, but Amir did not always do the same. For example, Amir failed to protect Hassan from Assef. Amir saw how it changed Hassan as well as their friendship and felt guilty about it throughout the rest of the book.

Katrina - Jealousy is also a theme throughout the book. From the beginning, Amir was jealous of his father's love for Hassan. For example, Amir was jealous of Hassan's scar because it made Baba sympathetic towards him.

Jolie - Forgiveness is a theme, but is not shown until the end. When Sohrab turns and smiles up at Amir after the kite competition, it was not just a end of Sohrab's silence. It signified a sort of peace , and allowed Amir to fully and finally forgive himself for letting Assef and his friends rape Hassan, knowing that Sohrab was safe and would have some normalcy.

Rowan- A theme throughout the novel is redemption, or a search for redemption. With the constant weight on Amirs shoulders, consuming his thoughts, him constantly referring to the choices in his childhood. Everything bad that happens, he seems to connect back to his past deeds. Then closer to the end he redeems himself through Sohrab and his confrontation with Assef.

Olivia Rottman - Love is a theme throughout the book. Amir wanting Baba's love, Amir and Hassan loving each other like brothers, Amir falling in love with Soraya, Sohrab learning to love Amir and Soraya. Love was behind everything each character did, whether good or bad.

Ellie -
Betrayal is a theme through this book. Baba betrayed Ali by having a child with Ali's wife. Amir betrayed Hassan by not stepping up for him in the alley and furthered his betrayal by making them leave his house.

Add your ideas to this thread about a character, or a character's relationship, in The Kite Runner as an idea for an analysis essay. Be sure to sign your name to the post.

Jared- Assef is an allegory for Hitler.

Moriah- Ali and Baba's relationship mirrors Hassan and Amir's relationsip. Sohrab and Amir's relationship represents a redeemed version of Hassan and Amir.

Jenny- Soraya, Amir's wife, was not a main character in the story. Although her role is minor from a plot perspective (similar to the roles of all Afghan women under the Taliban rule during this time), she still greatly influenced Amir's character development.

Emma- Hassan was the most influential person in Amir’s life. He wasn't able to realize until after his betrayal, the protection and guidance Hassan gave him. Amir aspired to be as good as Hassan in the eyes of their father, he wished he could be as brave in front of Assef, and in the end he strived to be as good of a father as Hassan would have been.

Add your ideas to this thread about symbolism or motif in The Kite Runner as an idea for an analysis essay. Be sure to sign your name to the post.

Dylan - The pomegranate tree and its many appearances throughout the story (especially how it acts as a constant through Hassan and Amir's everchanging relationship.

Olivia Ramsey-
The kite serves as a symbol of Amir’s happiness as well as his guilt. Flying kites is what he enjoys most as a child, not least because it is the only way that he connects fully with Baba, who was once a champion kite fighter. But the kite takes on a different significance when Amir allows Hassan to be raped because he wants to bring the blue kite back to Baba. His recollections after that portray the kite as a sign of his betrayal of Hassan.

Andrew Bomkamp -Scars appear throughout the book, on the pomegranate tree where they write their names, Soraya's birthmark, Hassan's harelip, etc.

Ellie -
The use of the word "lamb" to describe both Sohrab and Hassan. "Sacrifice" is a word associated with lambs in religious context. I think the author chose the word to convey the helplessness of the characters.

Add any questions your may have about The Kite Runner or about the analysis essay assignment.

Dylan - How is a rhetorical analysis essay different from other thesis essays?

Mr. H Responds - It is different from the Ed. Synthesis because you are only using once source for your evidence, in this case, the novel. It is different from the Phil. Musing essay because you are given the book to read, and now you are to write about rhetorical choices in a writing. However, it is fiction. So this is the expanded version of the rhetorical analysis prompt on the exam. I think one of the major issues for this assignment is coming up with a thoughtful, manageable thesis.

Jared- When writing this analysis, is it most effective to follow something similar to the outline we made last week?

Jared- How should we cite excerpts from the novel?

Mr. H Responds - Personally, I think a writer should always outline the essay. However, that does not mean one size fits all. The outline template completed last week was a simple intro., body, conclusion. Depending on purpose and pattern of development, the outline might look different. For example, if it was a cause and effect essay, that outline would be developed differently than a process analysis or comparison and contrast essay. I will post an outline template for the analysis essay. So the answer is yes, you could use last week's template in planning.

2nd question - MLA page citation. However, the context here will be somewhat different as you will be signaling what is going on in the text surrounding the quote or section paraphrased cited.
