He uses this knowledge to manipulate Ariel and Miranda into complying with his wishes. He holds his saving of Arial over her head while collecting knowledge from her. Prospero is able to tell his daughter whatever he wants because she has no further knowledge besides what he tells her. The pursuit of knowledge is not always positive based on the intent and effects of use. Depending on the intent of the learning the learner can use their knowledge as power to manipulate others.

In this scene, they are oblivious to the shift in power. The crewmates held all the power in the situation based on their knowledge and skills in navigating the storm. Power is situational and is based less on wealth or status and more on knowledge. Power can be changed based on the scenario because knowledge is a key power component. When the topic or situation changes some individuals may have more knowledge than others and can therefore manipulate the settings to their power.

In doing so he demonstrates his perspective and wisdom. He chooses not to be rude to the crewmates because of his respect for their power in that situation. Perspective can change the scenario completely based on the insight and opinion given to the situation. By changing your perspective you open up possibilities and potential simply by changing your mindset. This is because it shows the situation in a completely different light and allows you to grow and resolve the issue.

On the other hand, Gonzalo, a trusted advisor and counselor, has a hopeful perspective. Perspective can shift your view completely and change your attitude and outlook on life. In an attempt to cheer up the royals Gonzalo says "You have cause— / So have we all—of joy, for our escape / Is much beyond our loss" (Shakespeare 2.1.1-3). While Gonzalo celebrates their survival the others are sullen and moody. His hopeful perception of their misfortune leads him to have a better time on the island, meanwhile, Sebastian, Antonio, and Alonso are full of self-pity.

Power is fragile and can become dangerous if used without proper knowledge. In the form of an eagle, Ariel describes his intense power and explains why he is attacking the shipwrecked royals. He was commanded to avenge Prospero by scaring and torturing the royals. Ariel, among other things, says "Your swords are now too massy for your strengths / And will not be uplifted" (Shakespeare 3.3.85-86). In this scene, he demonstrates a misuse of power by ill intent. Propero's hostility refects through Ariel's actions because Prospero has control over Ariel and his power.
